Joel Porter's 75th minute strike kept Hartlepool's unlikely promotion push alive, earning them a draw with Bristol City in the first leg of the Second Division play-off semi-finals at Victoria Park.

Danny Wilson's visitors had taken the lead after just five minutes through Tony Rougier's powerful far-post header.

But after that they seemed happy to soak up Pools' attacks but Porter's leveller gives his side plenty to play for in the return game at Ashton Gate as they aim for a place in the First Division for the first time in their history.

Brighton earned an immediate return to Division One as they edged out Bristol City 1-0 in a tight Division Two play-off final courtesy of a single Leon Knight penalty.

A largely dull first-half devoid of any real chances had its only highlight when Leon Knight curled a free-kick against the Bristol City cross bar.

The second period was little better though Bristol City dominated possession but they lacked the craft to fashion a real chance.

As the final whistle approached extra time looked inevitable but Chris Iwelumo's driving run into the area, with just five minutes remaining, resulted in the former Stoke striker being caught by Danny Coles.

The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Knight stepped up to fire Brighton into the First Division.
