Huddersfield are firm favourites to reach the Nationwide Division Three play-off final as David Mirfin's strike earned them victory over Lincoln in the first leg at Sincil Bank.

The Terriers right-back crowned an impressive display with the winning goal when the home side failed to clear their lines after Alan Marriott saved Andy Booth's towering header with 18 minutes remaining.

Iffy Onuora's deft header - his first goal since rejoining Town in March - put Huddersfield in the driving seat after just five minutes but this was cancelled out by Gary Fletcher's 19th goal of the season.

Fletcher's tap-in inspired the hosts who rallied gamely but Town refused to buckle under fierce pressure and Mirfin emerged the hero to give Huddersfield the edge going in to the second leg at the McAlpine Stadium next week.

Substitute Lee Fowler hit the decisive penalty to take Huddersfield Town back into the Second Division at the first attempt. The Terriers prevailed 4-1 in a shootout after a goalless draw in Monday's Nationwide Three play-off final against Mansfield Town at the Millennium Stadium. Fowler joined Rob Edwards, Danny Schofield, and Tony Carss in scoring from the spot. Meanwhile goalkeeper Paul Rachubka saved from Wayne Corden and Liam Lawrence hit the crossbar for the Stags. Mansfield had twice come close to winning the match at the end of normal time but Huddersfield could have wrapped up victory far sooner but for Andy Booth missing a hat-trick of chances.
