Once again, "El Gallo" Jose Antonio Rivera will have to wait to defend himself as one of the top Welterweights in the world.
In yet the latest setback to his efforts to defend his title, Rivera retracted the tendon in his right thumb this week while sparring, and will be forced to undergo surgery on September 13th, exactly one year to the day after he first captured the belt in Germany.
Jose was scheduled to face Denmark's Thomas Damgaard on October 2nd at Madison Square Garden on the undercard of the Trinidad-Mayorga fight--a match also in doubt after Mayorga's arrest on rape charges in Nicaragua earlier today. The status of the entire card is in doubt, though initial statements from Don King Productions and the Trinidad camp have the fight continuing with a new lineup.
