Johnny Nelson insists he has long since given up on glory as he enters the final phase of his career.

Nelson defends his WBO cruiserweight title for the 12th time against German Rudiger May in Essen tonight.

The 37-year-old does not expect plaudits for doing so but admits he has grown frustrated with his lack of opportunities.

Nelson said: "If I was in this game for glory I would have jacked it in years ago.

"Now it is all about self-achievement. To have done this from such humble beginnings means a lot to me.

"I'm not in it for the fame and I've probably been criticised more than I've been patted on the back. It's all superficial to me."
