If you study history you find it repeats itself time and time again.

Here's a little story to illustrate my point:

1914

In the beginning they used aircraft to do artillery spotting, spy on troop movements, and effect Command and control.

The pilots used to wave at each other as they went by.

After awhile they started throwing rocks and shooting at each other with pistols and rifles. Soon they put machine guns on their planes. You know the rest of that part of the story

That was WW1.

Let's fast forward to 1991

In the beginning we used them for intelligence gathering, command and control, forward observing.

Then we started using them to attack the enemy with remotely controlled vehicles.

What's next?

Is the next theatre of operations in Space and Near Space?

If you accept Air Superiority as a foundation for current military operations (certainly well established by the Americans, and the Brits and Germans before them) is not Space superiority just an extension of that?

Could all this space race by China, India, and Europe just an escalation to this new theater of operations?

thoughts?

Well, Russia and the US have a HUGE jump on the rest... We've both had space based weapons for decades....
Likely, it's a joint goal of communications commerce, spying, and space weapon platforms for attack/defense, after learning about the existing ones hanging over their heads.....

Probably so, and what is scary is that it seems right now, though lacking technological and other advantage, they seem to have the drving ambition of the world, which usually leads to advantages and victories. This is very scary, imagine Red china- milityary sjuperpower of thew world.

Two words:

Planetary bombardment.

The US and Russia probably have nukes in space or some other crazy killsat. The future of space warfare is planetary bombardment. Missiles, striaght down into the gravity well.

, khrushchev wanted to place nukes in the moon

yes, American and the Russians both have decades of experience, but the world is catching up fast.

It seems military planners in the Pentagon are seeing things that way and have been pushing for "disposable" low orbit satellites for recon and whatnot. The thought is that in the next major conflict an opponent will try to disable, and probably succeed, the US spy satellites.

As a short term "gap" measure UAV's and P-3's can do theatre surveillance with Awacs doing the radar surveillance.

With so much riding on America's satellites (almost all the next generation smart bombs, not to mention navigation, and the LandWarrior system) the US will have to develop defensive and contingency strategies to cope with this potential threat.

Space based weapons is not far off, ever heard of the Star Wars Program? Its real. It is the project the US government has to put satellites into orbit that can shoot powerful LASERS out and destroy any target in the world. ( More information can be found on the main ATS page (Non Forum >> Military Projects >> Star Wars ) )

They aren't that far from getting into reality, with this, the US would surely establish global dominance. And China? They are going to have a manned mission to the moon by 2020..not too much of threat...They are still sending unmanned probes..we landed on the moon 34 years ago lol

There's no Question about Stars Wars being a reality, but the thread is more about the offensive or theater of operations space warfare.

Stars Wars by it's initial design was always intended to be defensive.

It's not going to stop a nation from shooting down an American spy satellite in geosynchronus orbit over their space.

Unless it's Canada or Central america...

Shoot down an aggressive nation's spy satellite(s)?

perhaps the next step in the verticalization of theater operations?

Perhaps the reason why US military planners are calling for cheap low orbit satellites?

Wouldn't it be a great way to do things? No chance of enemy detection until it was in the atmosphere and going very, very fast, plus the fact that you could hit just about any nation on teh face of teh earth within 24 hours. Not to mention it would make a great defnesive emplacement.

What's next?
MT: even smarter cruise missles, stealth discs, hoverdrones,,,which can deploy in any sized grid system to 'take-out' a 1-10 Kilometer region without the nuclear radiation contamination

Is the next theatre of operations in Space and Near Space?
MT: taking your thinking further to basics--> He Who Controls The High Ground....etc etc

If you accept Air Superiority as a foundation for current military operations (certainly well established by the Americans, and the Brits and Germans before them) is not Space superiority just an extension of that?

Could all this space race by China, India, and Europe just an escalation to this new theater of operations?

thoughts?
MT: The Unparalleled Advancements made by CHINA...(after the leaks & laptops missing from whitesands]...was/is being orchestrated (no doubt) by US strategists, for either of 3 possible reasons::A) the technology given them, while putting the US in jeopardy, also will prod the US into a arms/defense/1st strike build up....or B) the technologies China got, to launch men & research into space, was part of a secret deal....& the Chineese have to heed US diplomatic plots, so as to secure the next phase of technological sophistication= to put men on the moon....or C) The US feigned security breaches & supplied launch & orbit insertion technologies to china, technologies which they were eventually going to acquire from experiment, trial & error and/or by the French, Russian, India space programms...the US strategists & space theatre planners have counter measures already to go, as needed....the China space venture is, as you noted, 34 years antiquated !!

hrxll

So Chinas' Pride...& Americans' security concerns- [staying ahead of 'Them'.]..keeps the emotions High & passions Turbulent...etc etc the never-ending-story!!

...goodnight all
