Chris Horner's hopes of making the 1996 Olympic team hinged on a coach's vote -- one that didn't go his way.

He'll get another chance Saturday, and this time he's in control. If Horner wins his race, he's headed to the Athens Games.

Horner has been the dominant U.S.-based rider the past several years, and he'll be the strong favorite in the men's road cycling Olympic selection race.

"What happened in 1996 still bothers me and puts a little bad taste in the mouth," Horner said. "But cycling is just like the real world. There's politics involved that dictate certain things."
