Teesside bike riders finished among the top places in this year's North-east road race championship.

Bike Traks team-mates Chris Mark, Dave Lund and Mike Milen were a respective fourth, ninth and tenth.

Ex-professional Kevin Byers sprinted to victory on the long uphill drag to Belsay in Northumberland after 84 hard miles.

The VC Azzurri man got the better of Colin Ash (Cestria) in the final few metres to finish in a time of 3hrs 33min 30sec.

Team-mate and fellow promoting club rider Steve Ward came in third, just ahead of Acklam's Mark.

Keith Smith (MTS Cyclesport) was fifth, 15 seconds back, after escaping with the leading quartet on lap three of five.

Reigning regional champion Rick King (Bannatyne) had a tough time of it and abandoned the race.
