Meike Evers, Germany's double Olympic rowing champion, has announced her retirement to focus on her career as a policewoman. The 27-year-old said that
while going for a third title in Beijing in 2008 has its attractions, she considers her professional career is more important in the long term. Evers,
who is also a two-time world champion, won the quadruple sculls Olympic title in Sydney in 2000 and retained the crown in Athens last year.
