Cricket: Steve Waugh retires from International Cricket

An urgent press release was issued on Wednesday morning calling Australia's media to the Sydney Cricket Ground where the most successful Test captain in the history of world cricket had a "major announcement" to make.

Having defied the critics, who had been circling since the series against Pakistan in October 2002, and proved to selectors he remains worthy of a spot in the Test side, Waugh knew the time was right to tuck the bat under his arm and stride off.

It will be a sad loss to the international game he was and still is a great player.
