Dacourt set for Italian job as clubs agree deal

Roma claim they have agreed a deal with Leeds for the permanent transfer of French midfielder Olivier Dacourt to the Italian capital.

Roma sporting director Franco Baldini has revealed that 28-year-old Dacourt had agreed personal terms on a three-year deal and said he expected the move to be finalised later on Monday or Tuesday.

"Dacourt will stay in Rome until 2006,'' said Baldini. "I have sent a fax to Leeds this [Monday] morning regarding our talks last week and the deal should be officialised between today [Monday] or tomorrow [Tuesday].''

Dacourt joined the Giallorossi club in January on loan from Leeds for whom he signed three years previously from French club Lens for 7.2.

Both clubs initially agreed to a transfer fee of 4.2m if Roma opted to take up their option to sign the player at the end of the loan deal.

However, the Italians have succeeded in bringing the fee down slightly.

"The amount agreed is slightly lower than the amount previously requested by Leeds and there will not be any Roma players included in the agreement,'' said Baldini.

Negotiations regarding the player's transfer began last week with both clubs wanting to reach an agreement.

Dacourt has made 15 league appearances for the Rome outfit and has been a regular in Fabio Capello's line-up and the talented coach was keen to keep the French international.

It seemed to me that Dacourt was never comfortable at Leeds, speculation on his move has been going on a long time so i guess they would be happy to see the back of him...I don't think he is a bad player just never fitted in.

He seemed too arrogant for me and they should have cashed in on him a few years back when there was talk of a 10m bid. Decent player and I think he will do well in Italy.
