NASCAR: Bill Elliott may announce his retirement

Well I am not looking forward to this, as he has provided much excitement to the sport of NASCAR.

Voted many time Fan's Favorite year after year, having the speed record 'still' at Talladega of 212 mph which will probubly never be broken, and former Winston Cup Champion.

Currently he is in the top 10 in points, having won a race this season and placed well in most races, which means he is going out in style and still in the game.

Coincidence maybe that he is retiring the same year Winston is retiring as primary sponsor.

After he announces, supposedly this weekend at Atlanta, it has been suggested he may take the position of consultant.

He is going to be missed on the track!

He has been in Winston-Cup for 28 BIG years!

A couple that stood out:

35,161,583 -- Elliott's career winnings in dollars, sixth on the all-time list.

10 -- The number of points by which Elliott lost the 1992 Winston Cup championship to Alan Kulwicki, the narrowest margin in series history.

16 -- The number of NMPA Most Popular Driver Awards won by Elliott, from 1984-1988, 1991-2000 and 2002.

43 -- Elliott's career victories total, 14th on the all-time list and ninth-best in the modern era.

An interesting note, in 1992, Davey Allison, son of NASCAR veteran and superstar, Bobby Allison, was destined to win the Winston Cup Championship that year.

In the final race located in Atlanta that year, Davey only had to finish 18th or better to win the championship.

Ernie Irvan, spun out later in the race, in what was called the 'chute' bouncing off of the inside and outside walls, and ultimatly collecting Davey in the melee.

Alan Kulwicki went on to win the championship, it what was one of the narrowest of margins, along with Bill Elliott close behind.

I was a huge fan of Davey Allison, and was very disappointed.

As a final note, bothe Davey, and Alan, passed away in seperate off-track incidents, the following year. Davey in a helocopter accident at Talladega Speedway, and Alan in an airplane crash on the way to Bristol.

Truly a great loss for the sport, as the both of them held very promising careers.
