Track: Darlington Raceway (egg-shaped oval, 1.366 miles, 25 degrees banking in turns 1-2, 23 degrees in turns 3-4).

Distance 501.3 miles, 367 laps.

Last year: Jeff Gordon recorded his second straight victory by bursting in front of the pack with 45 laps to go and holding off Ryan Newman to take the Southern 500.

Fast facts: Jeff Burton was the last to win both Darlington races in 1999. In 46 years of racing at Darlington, there has been a sweep of the spring-fall events nine times. ... Jeff Gordon has six career wins at Darlington, including three straight from 1995-96. ... Johnny Mantz won the inaugural race in 1950 despite starting 43rd.

Starting Grid - Top 10

1 Ryan Newman
2 Jimmie Johnson
3 Terry Labonte
4 Elliott Sadler
5 Bobby Labonte
6 Matt Kenseth
7 Mark Martin
8 Ricky Craven
9 Greg Biffle
10 Dave Blaney

Time for Darlington to call it quits with Southern 500

The longest-running tradition in NASCAR ends on Sunday. The 54th Southern 500 will be the last one run on Labor Day weekend.

Yet this milestone event isn't even a sellout - which tells you a lot about why the race will be moved to November next year, while California Speedway near Los Angeles gets the weekend with which Darlington Raceway has been synonymous since 1950.

Even locals think the change isn't such a bad thing, and even some of stock car racing's deepest traditionalists say it may well be for the better.

Sorry for the typo, I meant Terry Labonte.

Damn, I had Harvick 3rd and he was 2nd.
