SANTA FE -- The state Transportation Commission approved a resolution Thursday to name a southern New Mexico highway after retired New Mexico State coach Lou Henson.
Commission Chairman Johnny Cope referred to Henson's long career in men's basketball as legendary in announcing the resolution to name N.M. 28 from Las Cruces to Sunland Park after the coach.
"He is a native New Mexican that is considered a national, state and local sports hero to all of us," Cope said.
Henson retired in January with a career record of 779-413, just 21 wins shy of becoming only the fifth coach in Division I history to win 800 games.
