Marat Safin on Thursday allowed himself a glass of champagne to celebrate his birthday and ending Roger Federer's 26-match unbeaten run in a stunning Australian Open semi-final. Defending champion Federer saved six match points before Safin, on his 25th birthday, finally secured a breathtaking 5-7 6-4 5-7 7-6 9-7 win after almost four and a half hours on Rod Laver Arena.

It was Federer's first defeat since the Olympics in August, and his first loss to a top 10 player since October 2003, a sequence of 24 victories. It was also only Safin's second win in eight matches against Federer, and he will now face Lleyton Hewitt or Andy Roddick in his third Melbourne final on Sunday.

well after the match, he was lost for words

Two-time finalist Marat Safin was almost lost for words as he tried to come to terms with his awesome five-set victory over Roger Federer in the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

The fourth seed saved five match points against the world No 1, who himself had to recover from match point down before eventually losing 9-7 in the deciding set.

"You to understand I'm not playing just a simple player, it's the number player in the , Roger," said the Russian, who was gaining revenge for defeat to Federer in last year's final.
