Russia's Marat Safin dropped his first set of the tournament but eventually proved too strong for Mario Ancic in the Australian Open on Friday.
Safin had cruised through the opening two rounds in Melbourne but was given a tougher test by rising star Ancic, who defeated Britain's Tim Henman on
his way to the Wimbledon semi-finals last year.
The fourth seed's famous temper occasionally threatened to boil over on the Rod Laver Arena but he kept himself in check long enough to complete a 6-4
3-6 6-3 6-4 third-round victory.
