Russian pin-up Maria Sharapova survived a scare before seeing off Lindsay Lee-Waters. The fourth seed lost the first set against Lee-Waters, but
showed that she isn't the current Wimbledon champion for nothing by battling back to win in three.
It was a far from vintage display from Sharapova, who has never been beyond round three here. She committed 44 unforced errors, but smashed down eight
aces in an entertaining match that she eventually settled 4-6 6-0 6-3 in one hour and 47 minutes.
