Former champion Mary Pierce was among Tuesday's first-round winners, while fourth-seeded Bulgarian Magdalena Maleeva was the lone upset victim at the
$225,000 Luxembourg Open.
The fifth-seeded Pierce, who titled here in 1998, handled American Carly Gullickson 6-0, 7-5, but qualifier Emma Laine of Finland sent Maleeva packing
in 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 fashion at CK Sport Kockelscheuer.
In other seeded play, No. 6 Tatiana Golovin of France whipped German Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-2, 6-3; No. 7 Greek Eleni Daniilidou drilled American Jill
Craybas 7-5, 6-1; and No. 8 Japanese Shinobu Asagoe held off Dutchwoman Michaela Krajicek 6-0, 6-7 (1-7), 6-1.
Other Day-2 wins came for Russian Dinara Safina, German Marlene Weingartner, Slovenian Tina Pisnik, Czech Kveta Peschke and Spaniards Anabel Medina
Garrigues and Maria Sanchez Lorenzo. Peschke took out Luxembourg's own Claudine Schaul 6-7 (8-10), 6-2, 6-0.
