Seeds Andrei Pavel of Romania and Fernando Verdasco of Spain were among Monday's first-round winners at the Stockholm Open.
The third-seeded Pavel dismissed dangerous Argentine Agustin Calleri 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), while the No. 8 Verdasco got past injured American Robby Ginepri
6-2, 2-1, as Ginepri retired due to a lower back problem.
In other first-round action, American Jan-Michael Gambill fought off Finn Jarkko Nieminen, the 2001 Stockholm runner-up, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-2; Danish
wild card Kenneth Carlsen crushed Swedish wild card Ervin Eleskovic 6-0, 6-1; and Swedish crowd favorite Thomas Johansson snuck past Belgian Xavier
Malisse 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-1). The 2002 Australian Open champion Johansson captured this Stockholm tournament in 2000 and was the runner-up in 1998.
American Mardy Fish beat young Swede Robin Soderling in last year's big- serving final at Kungliga Tennishallen.
The winner of this $822,772 indoor event will claim $115,000. The top seeds are American Andre Agassi and Swedish U.S. Open semifinalist Joachim
Johansson, who will open up against his fellow big-server Gambill.
