France's Amelie Mauresmo retained her world No.1 spot when she beat US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova to advance to the final of the WTA tournament
in Filderstadt, Germany.
Top seed Mauresmo needed to win the semi-final to hold off world No.2 Lindsay Davenport, who she will meet in the final.
The Frenchwoman ousted fourth-seeded Kuznetsova 7-5 6-4 for her third win in as many meetings with the 19-year-old Russian.
Kuznetsova dominated early play, but Mauresmo jumped on a chance to break at the end of the first set and held her advantage.
"I got a break chance and took it," said Mauresmo. "She didn't use all her chances, but it was still a tough match."
