Tennis: Kim Clijsters to miss US Open

Women's world number two Kim Clijsters has been ruled out of the US Open.

The Belgian, who was last year's runner-up in New York, has been forced to announce her decision as a left wrist injury which has impeded her progress this year has yet to fully heal.

A statement on her website (www.kimclijsters.be) said: "Kim's recovery from a tough wrist injury is progressing well.

"The muscle mass around the joint is not what it used to be and that could be dangerous for a new injury. Therefore Kim decided to cancel for the US Open.

"Kim knows that she has to prevent herself from taking unnecessary risks during a tournament."

She will be missed form the competition. I don't remember seeingany other big names that won't be there, so it should be pretty competitive.
