The Arizona Cardinals have released fullback Dennis McKinley, just hours after he was arrested by Phoenix police and charged with being the head of a drug trafficking ring.

McKinley and three other suspects were taken into custody on Tuesday morning after members of the Phoenix police department's drug enforcement bureau executed five search warrants throughout the city.

McKinley, 26, faces charges that include conspiracy to distribute marijuana, a spokeswoman for the Arizona Attorney General's office said.

The 10-month investigation has already netted more than 1,500 pounds of marijuana, two tractor-trailers, nine vehicles, 11 guns and more than 400,000 US dollars in cash.

Trying to rebuild their wide receiving corps, the Arizona Cardinals selected Anquan Boldin of Florida State with the 54th pick.

Arizona were desperate for help at the position after losing David Boston, Frank Sanders and MarTay Jenkins in the off-season.

They used one of their two first-round picks on Penn State wide receiver Bryant Johnson.

Boldin hurt himself with 40-yard dash times above 4.7 at the scouting combine and has durability questions stemming from an ACL injury in his left knee.

He was still expected to be a first-day pick because of his natural size and athleticism.

Boldin caught caught 65 passes for 1,011 and 13 touchdown passes last season.
