Last season we saw great improvement in this team, but again they started off red hot and finished ice cold. They have a solid back and a solid QB, they added a new weapon at WR with David Boston, but they lost a couple of Key defenders. Will this season coming up be the same story for the Chargers?

In a move that should upgrade the interior of a secondary in flux, the San Diego Chargers have signed free agent safety Kwamie Lassiter, one of the top players still available in the unrestricted pool.

Lassiter, 33, signed a three-year contract, details of which were not yet available

The veteran free safety had played his entire eight-year career with the Arizona Cardinals before becoming an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Although Lassiter started all 16 games in each of the last four seasons, the Cardinals made little effort to retain him.

The former University of Kansas standout, signed by the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent in 1995, registered 119 tackles in 2002, third-most on the team, and also had two interceptions and eight passes defensed.

Thats a huge addition to their defense which is reeling from the loss of All-Pro MLB Junior Seau. I remember watching Kwame blanketing Cowboys receivers, he's a good cover corner.

Just one day after signing veteran Kwamie Lassiter, the San Diego Chargers on Tuesday continued the offseason overhaul of their secondary by releasing safety Rogers Beckett, who started 26 games over the past two seasons.

The move was not totally unexpected, in that the San Diego coaches had not attempted to disguise their displeasure with Beckett's performance in 2002, but still was at least mildly surprising given the fact the former Marshall star is a former second-round draft choice.

Releasing the three-year veteran means that the Chargers have now cut both their starting safeties from 2002. The club earlier in the offseason cut ties with veteran strong safety Rodney Harrison, who subsequently signed with the New England Patriots.

Offensive lineman Solomon Page signed a one-year contract with the San Diego Chargers.....
Page started 15 games last season for Dallas, including 10 at right tackle and five at right guard. He was the Cowboys' starting right tackle in 2001 and the right guard in 2000....
A second-round draft pick in 1999 out of West Virginia, he spent his first three seasons under line coach Hudson Houck, who now serves in the same capacity in San Diego....

Continuing to stress the secondary, the San Diego Chargers selected Tuskegee cornerback Drayton Florence with the 46th pick.

The Chargers also went for a cornerback in the first round, trading down to select Sammy Davis from Texas A&M with the 30th pick.

In his final collegiate season, the 6ft Florence started at left cornerback, recording 43 tackles and five interceptions. He also had a team-high 15 pass deflections.
