This is not a machine gun, but since it's similar, I'll say the M-249 Squad Automatic Weapon. It has a high rate of fire, very light, and basically just nasty. It was conceived based on the German MG-42.

I thought the previous M-60, the bigger one, was much better.

my fav are the 12,7 utes NSV

It is also available in NSVT (Tank) variant as co-axial or turret mounted gun with electrically powered trigger device. Almost all recent Soviet and Russian tanks have NSVTs as AA guns, mounted on the top of the turret.

NSV is extremely reliable and very powerful, capable of piercing of 16mm of steel armor at 500 meters.

FN MAG!

Belgian design..

That replaced the crappy M60s in even US service!!!

(US Armed forces had enough of that weapon, as it was not good for anything..)

And replaced these with FN MAG aka M240..

(Which btw, is older design than M60.. but still is one best GPMGs around!!!)

The best still is MG3 (Todays MG42.. it was first and best yet!!! Still in production..)

MG3 that is..

But here is:

7,62 KVKK 62 (7,62x39mm LMG Model 1962..)

and..

12,7 ITKK 96 (12,7x108mm NSV..)

These are MGs that i have fired.. didnt like either..

LMG would be otherwise perfect.. but it doesnt have quick-change barrel and its belts are 100 round and thats it.. (they cant be linked..)

And the Russian Heavy NSV.. well.. flash and recoil both were something else..

This my friend isnt MG, this is a automatic grenade launcher..

And in that class of weapons there isnt anything as good as AGS-17 Plamya..

It has much more 'heads' to its tally..

Terrorist heads..

I once saw on news as Russian troops fired with one at this building.. 4 Grenades fired, 4 grenades made direct hits to the building.. and after that there was no building left..

The FN Minimi is the real name of the M-249 SAW, It is a 5.56mm version of the FN MAG GPMG

The MG42(MG3) is my favourate GPMG, nice looking and fast firing, Its 5.56mm version is the CETME Ameli.

I also like the Browning M1919A4, It may be heavy, bulky, but it is hard hitting to the enemy since it is Blowback operated, Wish they made a 5.56mm version of it.

The MG34 was a good machine gun but it was too hard to make for mass production. It had a two fingered trigger to fire either full or semi auto fire but was soon beaten by the MG42.

I guess the MG 3 and the Mag are the best gpmg's

The Russians have a new mg this one Pecheneg but i have about no info of how good it actually is.

The Pkm was a very good machine gun aswell but is dated now.

When you look at heavy MG's well everyone says M2HB but the problem of it is that its dated.

the BRG 15 seems to be a kickass gun but its canned.

So i guess the Kord is the best HMG.

LMG's

The minimi seems very nice but i heared the MG 43 is better.

Define 'best'

The best GPMG is err the GPMG, Jimpy, FN MAG etc - will probably never be bettered

Best 'heavy' is the Browning 50 cal - 80+ year old design and still in service

For SAW then probably the Minimi for short range/ FIBUA, Bren for long range

Certainly the M 60 pig isn't on the list - however you define 'best'

Overall the best one, though, is one carried and cleaned by someone else but you get to fire it
