I doubt that he lost his control over a couple of days, but it is a rather odd case, so that may be the truth

A friend of mine just told me that this was just a fabrication of Plimpton's, done as an April fools joke.

yes it was...good one gibbs baby...it was a great story back when it was published and it still holds up well..this story has been on several lists of the best april fools jokes in history, and they also expanded it into a book...good job

this story was published in SI as a serious article when it came out..(note the date on the article) i remember that it had everyone fooled when it was written, it has become one of the classic pieces of baseball writing...hope you enjoyed it
