The Oakland Athletics will be without infielder Mark Ellis for the remainder of the season because of an injured right shoulder. Ellis, who has a torn
labrum in the shoulder, is scheduled to undergo surgery. Team doctor Jerrald Goldman will perform the procedure.
He sustained the injury during the spring when he collided with shortstop Bobby Crosby while diving for a Sammy Sosa ground ball. Ellis was originally
slated to miss about two months until an MRI revealed the tear. The 26-year-old Ellis had nine homers and 52 RBI to go along with a .248 batting
average in 2003.
