(CBS/AP) The Senate on Tuesday approved the most sweeping changes to Medicare since its creation 38 years ago, adding a long-sought prescription drug
benefit and a contentious experiment with private competition.
Passage of the $395 billion bill was secured by a 54-44 vote.
A major victory for President Bush, the vote capped years of wrangling over the drug benefit, and days of legislative maneuvering by Democrats hoping
to block the compromise bill.
