Mth 26

Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.

39 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.

38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.

39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt .

40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?

41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

43 And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.

44 And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words.

45 Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

46 Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.

47 And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

The Tibetan Lamas were said to have meditated instead of sleeping at night. I found this to be a helpful practice for reaching deep levels of meditation.

I believe that if people could conquer their need to sleep, by meditating instead, they would advance spiritually much faster, and reach outside of this world into other levels of reality. Perhaps even become able to view the future.

People can conquer sleep through many means, drugs and sheer willpower can do it. Though I have yet to hear people consider it a spiritual breakthrough.

Only through meditation to avoid sleep can you do this? Since there seems to be at least more than one way to break the natural cycle.

As an insomniac, I seriously question that. I'll admit... at the 48 hour mark, reality seems to bend and twist some. But this is not pleasant. Even with resting and Jolt (sweet, sweet, overcaffinated Jolt), it's hard to go 48 hours without sleep. I would not attempt such a feat if I could help it.

Exactly, you would go insane if you did that too much. It would suck.

Yes, seeing as sleep deprivation is considered a form of torture.... it would soon render me even less sane. Even 24 hours isn't that pleasant, but that's what an insomniac's cycle is usually like- stay up a long long time, then crash around 22-28 hours without sleep. And no, it's not go to sleep after that, it's your body physically crashes and you try to get somewhere soft to pass out.
