"Sunburn" is tactical missile..
(used by FACs and corvetes mostly..)

They did have and still have much more effective and longer ranged designs..

Wow, talk about propaganda, especially the page about Saudi Arabian f-15's. No Saudi F-15's will ever take off in rage against Israel. Saudi Arabia does not arm, or maintain their American F-15's. This is done by ex-American GI's working for American Defense Contractors and they would not send these planes armed with offensive weapons against Israel. Saudi's do nothing for themselves, but depend on workers from other nations to do EVERYTHING EXCEPT WIPE THEIR ASSES FOR THEM.

What exactly is this missile? Is it a fast heavy hitting missile or is it a tactical nuke? Cant find much about it on the net. I could only find about ten different designs on Janes. Including some designs using RamJets.

Like I said though. The billions of dollars they spend on Carriers are a waste.

In a few years the US navy will have lasers to shoot these things down. No missile can travel faster than light. So Hah!

No doubt about it, the Sunburn is a bad-ass missile, but not invincible. There are various countermeasure tactics in place that will reduce the effectiveness of an attack, both by hard-kill and soft-kill methods.

Also, what everyone fails to mention in posts like this, is that fact that it is very unlikely that any platform (ship, airplane, submarine) will be able to approach a CBG (carrier battle group) undetected. The only remote possibility would be a sub-surface launch. In that case, the launching sub would give away it's position and would be quickly taken out. The launched missile(s) would then be either decoyed by "rubber ducks", chaff or jamming or taken out via hard-kill by the escorts. In the worst case, an escort would take the hit to protect the high value asset, the carrier.

BTW, the fire control and launching system for this missile are way too much to launch off of a "cigarette" boat so that theory is ridiculous.

Can't target what u can't see, at 9 feet u can't see these on RADAR, or its almost imposs, fire 200 sunburns at a carrier group and u WILL destroy it. If you can't see these missiles clearly on radar how will the laser target it? You could manually fire the laser(s) once you could see the missiles but at mach 2.9 or whatever if u can see three miles then you don't have much response time. As for anti missile missiles, how many scuds did patriot missiles stop....75% or somthing. I would not trust carrier protection to these as u only need one sunburn, if nuclear tipped, to get through.

Without carriers America would find air superiority a whole new ball game.

A sub with a crew of about 100 for a carrier with 85 planes, 5000 odd crew is a very good millitary eachange for the country loosing the sub....and at mach 2.9 if the missile hits another ship in the way of the carrier it would be pure luck.

Also if u can fire these from a 40 foot truck then while a cigarrette boat may not work a "lost pair" of large commercial fishing boats could stray close to the carrier and fire some of these sunburns meaning no time to respond.

If you launched even 2 sunburns about 15 or 30 seconds apart and detonated the first one before it got to the carrier the blast might not destroy the carrier but it would pretty much blind it and cause mass confusion, the second sunburn would then be free to fly through and take out the carrier.

The actual range of those systems is classified, but you might be able to find a very rough estimate in Jane's or somewhere.

The 2 salvo attack is quite possible, but do you all think a carrier steams around by itself - unprotected and unescorted? There are numerous "picket ships" and 1+ subs that travel along with a carrier. A surface platform could not launch an OTH (over the horizon) attack and still be in range of the carrier without first being detected by the picket ships. The picket ships would then relay the info to the carrier who would then have the opportunity to effect countermeasures.

The US Navy's sub net is pretty poor. In exercises, some sub commanders were able to sneak up and practically knock on surface ships' hatches. The situation may have improved somewhat, and foreign subs are a lot easier to catch, but a stealthy sub would be still my best bet to take out a carrier, not a surface-skimming missile.

Then of course, there's that damn noisy Navy sonar that kills dolphins.

I have no doubt that Sunburn could take out a nuclear carrier lickety split.

However in the carrier battle group is a nuclear submarine carrying 20 Nukes. Backing up the submarine is 2000 ICMBs at home and another 20-50 bombers.

This game is so sad. I wish everyone would take their ball and go home.
