The Bush administration appears determined to build a new generation of small nuclear weapons, especially "earth penetrators", designed to attack
nuclear, chemical or biological materials buried deep underground.
A new form of warfare is coming. It is the extension into the nuclear field of the highly accurate conventional bombs and missiles already in use.
In the jargon preferred by those in this business, they are called "small build" weapons - weapons of about one kiloton, 1,000 tonnes of
explosive.

Yeah I read about bunker busting bombs that carry a smaller nuclear warhead in a Popular Science magazine around 2 or 3 months ago.. I don't like the
idea one bit.

These "small build" weapons are actually what has been referred to in the press as "nuclear bunker busters" but are in fact referred to as
"Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrators" to military planners. In fact, the U.S. arsenal already contains a nuclear bunker-buster -- known as the B61-11
-- but it was built to penetrate only soil and will not survive rock.
These new nuclear penetrators will be built in the shape of a thin cylinder with a pointed nose. When dropped from an airplane, its weight and speed
allow it to smash through the surface of the ground or puncture rock or concrete.
Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos National Laboratories each have an existing small hydrogen bomb they are proposing to modify to become the "Robust
Nuclear Earth Penetrator". Livermore will work with a bomb known as the B83. Los Alamos will modify the B61, the bomb that now serves as the U.S.
nuclear bunker buster.
Thats my 2 cents worth...

the main reason of people against the use of nuclear weapons were those pictures of hirosima.
That was an uncontrolled explosion. now is it so because of people being afraid for it rechearch is not been done. because at the end they may have a
controlled explosion or controlled use of the energy comming from it and use it for other purposes like beamed explosions ect.

they are not talking about some lame "suitcase" bombs your talking about...they are talking about laser guided nuclear weapons that are going to be
used on small targets.....

Controlled or Uncontrolled doesnt really matter. Once the dust cloud of debris and radioactive particles is up in the air, its all in how the winds
shift, and that is completely uncontrolled. The fact of the matter is that all the weapons in the NBC arsenal are stupid, dangerous, and useless.

Stupid and Dangerous.. yes~
But useless? If it's used at all then it's useful for something - certainly nothing good, but useful just the same...
guess I'm being a bit too picky today... anyone have some Mydol?

sirCyco.......
"We" is refering to who?
You really think that we, the US, are the only ones toying around with this or even adding to existing nuclear stockpiles?
Might want to try again.....

Try to threaten everyone with what they go.

the article mentions the bush administration so i would say that it has its place in this discussion..
