radar flashlight that can see through walls

Topic started on 18-12-2006 @ 01:16 AM by conspiracymaster

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ), through the Joint (Justice-Defense) Program Steering Group (JPSG), is sponsoring Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) in developing an inexpensive, handheld, low-power radar that will enable law officers to detect individuals through interior building walls. It works by sensing the motion of an individual's chest when they breath.

GTRI is currently designing and refining the first prototype unit. A laboratory test area has been constructed consisting of a section of home siding and drywall, a wooden front door, and a section of brick and mortar. The laboratory model shown here, was able to detect individuals through each of these materials. It also demonstrated the ability to detect an individual through the laboratory's cinder block walls. GTRI is working to combine the two parts of this device into a single unit. NIJ plans on demonstrating the Radar Flashlight with law enforcement agencies through its National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLECTC) (Southeast Regional Center) before the end of 1999.

wow ive heard about invading privacy but this is going too far. if you have a pulse this flashlight will find you.

The first thing I said was "wow" when I read your thread title. "Sensing" and "seeing" are two very different things.

Nice find though I think it could help law enforcement a lot but I think it's going to be difficult to use.

Why is this invading privacy? Why do you consider this innovation going too far. As far as I can tell this device is designed to locate persons behind a wall, so for example officers attempting to conduct a dynamic entry in a hostage situation or a high risk warrant would be able to locate any individuals in the next room and ascertain their number and location prior to entry. This would be extremely useful in preventing collatoral casulaties in high risk situations.

The system you describe here is not a stand alone surveillance device and does not invade your privacy in that respect. While I can only speak for the UK here, any surveillance needs a considerable amount of authorisation by the police and other agencies (called RIPA - The Regulation of Investatory Powers Act) and this is kept under stringent review whilst any survellance is under way.

I think it will help with raids, I would like to know if there is someone behind the wall when I am about to kick in the door.

i think the military will use something like that to look into suspected terrorist hideouts to check for hostiles.
