There's an important story developing tonight at the Justice Department. The non-partisan Center for Public Integrity obtained a closely-guarded
document that shows plans for a sweeping expansion of the government's police powers.
Until now, few people outside of the department, not even members of key congressional committees have seen this draft legislation. It could lead to
increased surveillance and greater secrecy - all in the name of the war on terror. It raises questions about how we balance liberty and security - the
rights of individuals versus the rule of law.
www.pbs.org...
Anyone watch PBS tonight? Bob Barr was on talking about the above information. He is a Republican and he is very concerned about the Patroit Act
himself.
A Republican!!!

You may have a good point here e_w,
but don't say that the Democrats should be elected.
That is no solution to any problem but the creation of new problems only.

Yes, it's hilarious.
In the same way as the cooked intelligence that was used to sell the concept of invading a sovereign nation because it was an immediate threat to the
US.
Well, it's not really funny. But it shows the depths that US politics have sunk to.
Now that people have a better understanding of the full intention behind the police state, there will of course be less people of any political
persuasion behind it.

I honestly fear where Bush is taking the US. His changes to the US foreign policy has a very good chance of plunging the world into WW3.

We all need to be highly concerned. our country and the world is on the slippery slope to totalitarianism.
The only way to have a peacefull and secure nation is to have a peacefull and secure world. The problem in a word is "want" as long as people want
for the basic
things, there will be strife. The current situation is the latest in a long series of events that trace back to the founding of Isreal. Our support for
that state is the primary reason for the destabilization of the World we live in . So a peoples want of a home has lead to this
Sad state of affairs

Look I seriously don't have a problem with more monitoring by the Government. We had to deal with certain laws implementated in the 1st and 2nd world
wars.
Now if you are doing something wrong, I could imagine that you would not want any more monitoring, but since I really don't have anything to worry
about it doesnt bother me.
The FBI is not going to catch these criminals by guessing who they are. They are going to need more monitoring in order to stop criminals(terrorists)
in todays tech savvy world.
If you expect the FBI, NSA, CIA to catch anyone with laws and cutbacks that were put in place in the late 80's and early 90's then you are
delusional.
I guess I dont see a problem with any of this as long as it is used to enforce the law. You break the law then you deserve the punishment you get.
Live your life like a law abidding American and you shouldnt have any problems. There will be mistakes made, but I sure would take our system over any
other in the world.

slowdown dreamz...just 'cause YOU think YOU are not doing anything wrong does not mean 'they' wont look at something YOU are doing as
'suspicious.'..maybe like posting or belonging to certain ..websites....and such..
if one does a search about prosecutions with patrioit act..you wil find a large lack of 'terrorists' that it as been used against. it is another
case of the govt 'bait and switch' trick...'hey public..we need this for this..but we really want it for a bunch of other things..and once we get
it passed, there will be no way to appeal it......so just deal with it..and anyway it is for your own good'
if the us public is not carefull and and paying attention, which the usually don't untill it is too late, we will willing give up the freedoms that
make america america.
the majority of the american public are like lemmings....they just follow each other around untill one of 3 things happen...1) they walk off a cliff,
2) they are eaten by a bunch of predators 3) something bad starts to haoppen to them personnaly , and by that time it is too late.....

Dreamz..........
People with your metality are a greater threat to America than saddam, Bin Laden, Hitler, Stalin, and China all put together!
Why fear terrorism when I live in a country where people want a totalitarian state?
I may as well be living in the middle east!

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

The second Patriot Act (as well as Patriot Acts III, IV, etc.) will quite easily get implemented because most people have a very hard time caring
about something that doesn't personally affect them, espicially when the economy sucks like it does. I'm sure alot of people will strongly support
them (gotta stop them terrorists! er, and drug dealers, and hobos) but the vast majority of people simply Do. Not. Care. Even the people implementing
the policies do not care...it's merely a bureaucracy trying to support itself at all costs...
