Why must I die?

The controversy over embryonic stem cells has encouraged us all to learn much more about cell biology than the brief review we received in high school.

I now know that a stem cell is defined as a cell that is capable of replicating itself and developing into a variety of specialized cells such as muscle and bone.

While the debate has centered around stem cells obtained from an embryo, I have also learned that I too have stem cells, as do all animals, for they play a life-long role in replacing and repairing tissue.

However, the most fascinating aspect of stem cells that I've learned is that they have the capability to live forever.

Science Proves Physical Immortality Possible

Well, we know that the human body is designed to live for quite some time. I think it kind of adds credence to the "myth" in Genesis that states that God intended man to live forever. It also may open some doors to God's promise in Revelation that "There will be no more death." I have a question that I have pondered for quite sometime I want to see what you all think. Is God or the creative force using science to bring about his/its kingdom?

If we can master stem cells. Here are some other things we can do. We can stem cells the beasts of the worlds. Man can be as strong as a bear, as fast as a lion, can breath in the water like a fish, can fly like an eagle, and can evolve into something that can live in another planet. LIke the mmoon then mars!

Donuts,I am sure that we could. However,I am somewhat concerned about the moral ramifications of some of these thing. While I am all for adult stem cell research,I am not so sure that we can even benefit from foetal stem cell research. There has been no evidence that foetal stem cell research would be beneficial at all, while Adult stem cells seem very promising.

This is promising for mankind. We of people spread to another location and consume its natural resources and spread out some more, we're like a plague. Immortality would ultimetely speed up our growth progress through to the cosmos, that's for sure! That is if we can get off this rock

Ayeron, I certainly know where you are coming from on the "plague" part. Remember,I have referred to humanity as a "cancer upon the earth." Anyway,I think the point here is that, assuming that there is a coming shift of consciousness, man could possibly be on his way to reaching a paradisical type of existence. Now whether or not it will actually come to pass is a question that we all must ask ourselves. I think that there will certainly need to be a change in man's mindset before it ever happens.

^^ Okay, take it easy Agent Smith. I don't know about the rest of you, but I, for one, want to live forever if I can. If you don't want that, then your only option is death, which isn't very comforting to me.

This will not stop death, eventually you will get in a car accident or get shot or something.

Who are you talking to? No one has really said anything against it,yet... All I said is that humanity will have to have a shift in consciousness before this can really happen.

It's directed toward 7Ayreon in response to his spreading to other paces in the universe like a virus. Sorry for the confusion, but I thought it was pretty clear whom I was speaking to.

Well,while I may not 100% agree with Ayeron,I understand where he/she is coming from. Humanity has already all but destroyed the earth.. If we do somehow find a "miracle" cure for death,then it is inevitable that we will have to migrate to other planets.. Now,if there is a large change in consciousness,for the positive, then all of that is well and good,but as it is now... :shk: Nah....

Stem cells won't allow us to do that. They are specialised for our bodies and what type of cell they grow into depends on the body (if ones in the spine, it will be a spine cell. if ones in the brain it will be a brain cell).

The ramifications of stem cell research are massive. They would completely change everything about life. When our bodies become and old and start to fade, a shot of stem cells could theoretically regenerate us.
Once we emerge form the womb, our brain cells start dying. What if we get a shot of stem cells into our brains monthly? Our intelligence could be vastly increased.

I for one think stem cell research is the key to our next economic/biological/industrial step. However, people moan about the ethics of it. Its my opinion that the long term results will far outweigh the present debates.

I don't "moan" about adult stem cell research,it has proven to be very promising. However,I do question the validity of looking into foetal stem cells because they haven't proven to be promising at all.

I don't think you should rely on that site for science news, because niether the editor nor the reporter understood what was being said in the material they found.

The cells are NOT immortal. They live about as long as any other cell in your body. When they become another type of cell they also have the same lifespan as that cell (for instance, when they become skin cells or neural cells or cartilage.)

The cultures, however, can keep going and going and going (as do cancer cell cultures.)

Could we replace old worn-out and badly functioning organs with stem cells? Maybe. But that still wouldn't mean that we'd achieve immortality.

Well,we certainly will never know by being a society of nay-sayers will we? Like I said, I wouldn't support it unless there was a drastic change in the mindset of humanity... I do mean drastic... To be honest,I don't really see that occurring any time soon, so, it's probably all a moot point anyway.

( let me get this straight...we are the ones doing the science and lets say a hundred years from now its mastered and we can live forever...so after we spend all the time and money...you want to just give all that credit to "god". )

Also...I am for anywork on stem cells...the more research...the more cures.

I think that there's nothing wrong with stem cell research. It may not make us GODS ON EARTH but it will let us live a life free of a lot of terminal illnesses.

Relatively simple. The only way that I would favor there being some immortal "miracle" cure for everything is if there was a drastic change in the human mindset... Given that there would be a population explosion that has never been seen,we would have to go to other planetary bodies to live. Now,given what humanity has done to earth,would you trust the present mindset of humanity in another biosphere? I wouldn't. We'd probably just trash that system to..

Cancer cells in general are much more durable than any normal cell in the Human body. I find it amazing that no one else has noticed this. I wonder if it would be possible to somehow control the cancer cells, and to manage to make them behave in a manner more in line with the normal cells. Should this actually happen, then all I could see happening is the cells in our bodies being strengthened by the new addition of more durable membranes on the cells, which makes them more resilient to all kinds of diseases and malformations.

Just my thoughts.

If that's what you think, then you haven't been following the news regarding this issue as closely as I have.

Pretty recently, scientists cured a Parkinson's-like disease in rats with embryonic stem cells. The article does mention that the treatment created a tumor, but we know that the promise of embryonic stem cell research is real if we can prevent it from turning cancer, which hopefully won't be too difficult.

Also, you have no idea how many promising research projects got the rug pulled out from them--financially speaking--when that asshole Hwang Woo Suk came out with his fraudulent research regarding patient-specific embryonic stem cells. Technology Review covered it here and here. I don't know what happened to him, but I hope he got some severe punishment handed to him. A lot of those research projects never recovered, or if they did, many of them had to practically start over.

we already have to many people on this planet and we still fight and bicker. this will only make the problem worse. 1st it will start off, who gets it. this will cause an uproar cause alot of people will want it. the earth then will get overpopulated. things will start to get worse, they will have to change the laws on this. this is nothing but chaos. it will be the norm to just kill people who do not obey the laws. it is bad enough. i myself would like this , but im not sure about overpopulation and what that causes. we the united states have too many immigrants already. plus our own. the problems just get worse, the more people there are. this is not a good idea, tho ,yes , sure i would like to live forever. it would be a living hell tho, with all the people. i dont know about all of you ,but i appreciate my time alone and space to do what i like to do. not have joe , smuck , and telly and others to add to the equation. no thank you. very bad idea. even if one could get a human to live on the moon or wherever, one day it will get overpopulated like earth and then the problems begin. mankind has been plagued with problems since the existance of man. adding to the problems of overpopulation only makes things worse and we caint even take care of our own here , how is more people going to help the situation.
