For me, air shows have become one of the defining elements of the summer season. The smell of hot dogs, hamburgers, jet fuel, and the occasional wif
of burnt smoke from the aircraft performing their flight displays coupled with the ear piercing sound of afterburners provides a thrill unlike almost
any other. However, this may soon become a thing of the past for some enthusiasts.
I've been attending the Willow Grove NAS Sounds of Freedom Air show now for several years. Because of BRAC, last years show might very well be the
last one at the grove despite the fact that the base will not officially close until 2010. Willow Grove has always been a great show to attend and
because of my proximity to the base, I often see A-10’s screaming over my home. I’ll be sad to see it close.
So, what exactly is the purpose of this thread you may be wondering? I just thought it would be nice to have a place here at ATS for us aircraft and
air show enthusiasts to share our experiences of attending great air shows and seeing impressive flight displays. We could also keep each other up to
date on future schedules and other interesting news. I hope to see your comments soon.

My town has a 3 day airshow every year. Apparently it's one of Canada's biggest airshows too. Sadly in a number years it will be gone, due to the
airport becoming more commercial. Although I haven't gone to the airshow itself in years. I always go every monday morning when everyone starts to
leave and I go and park by the side of the road near the end of the runway. I find that having those jets flying right above you much more exciting
Like my first (and only time) of seeing an F-14 flying. I was standing on the hood of my car looking through the view finder of my camera, looking at
it as it took off and then thinking, "is this guy going to pull up?", and flew right over and very low, literally blowing my hair back. I almost
lost my balance. He then pulled straight up and disappeared into the clouds.
This airshow also used to get the B.2 Vulcan regularly up until '83. Apparently I was there for it's last appearance, but I would have only been 2
years old at the time, so I don't remember it. I think an SR-71 also did a fly by that year too.
In the late 80's and early 90's the Russians came with there stuff. Sadly they don't come here anymore. Nor do we really ever get any European
aircraft in general these days.
Here's the official site. Shows the history of past airshows on there too. www.abbotsfordairshow.com...

Thanks Mondo. I was hoping others would like this idea.
Jra,
I know what you mean about loosing the airshow. I used to go to one at the Wilkes-Barre International Airport for years. Several years ago the
stopped having shows there. I have no idea why. The only place airshows are held around here now is at the Grove but we will lose that. The next
closest will be Mcguire AFB...about 4 hours away

Well if there's any flying around Oshkosh in Wisconsin I'm going to have to go. This year I'm hoping to spend the full day up there if I can,
maybe I'll get to see some nice stealth planes.
Anybody know if they're flying UAV's at airshows yet?

Eurofighter Typhoon at Aero India 2007.
BANGALORE, India/HALLBERGMOOS, Germany --- After a successful 2006, the Eurofighter partnership starts the new year with a strong presence at this
year's Aero India in Bangalore. The Eurofighter consortium and the EUROJET engine consortium present the programme to the Indian military and
aerospace leadership as well as the public for the first time.
The capabilities of Eurofighter Typhoon can be assessed by professional visitors at the Eurofighter stand in Hall C, Stand C4,6 by flying the unique
Cockpit Demonstrator with air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities fully integrated. Air Force and Industry pilots will present first hand
information.
Additional features on display at the Eurofighter stand include the EJ200 engine and the electronic scanning antenna developed by the Euroradar
consortium, which is soon to be flown on a Eurofighter Typhoon Development Aircraft in Germany.
A press briefing with senior customer and industry officials is scheduled for 7 February at 1400 in Hall 1 of the press centre on show site. Media are

Russia to display new jet engine at India air show
MOSCOW, February 2 (RIA Novosti) - Russian jet engine maker Salut will showcase a modernized engine for Su-family fighters at an air show in India,
the company said Friday.
The company has spent $40 million on developing the AL-31FM1 engine for Su-27, Su-30, Su-33 and other Sukhoi aircraft and successfully completed its
tests in October last year.

HAL to unveil new copter at Aero India
full-scale mock-up of a new attack helicopter will be the highlight of the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) display at the Aero India show here
next week, even as India's premier aircraft maker looks to cementing new partnerships with key aviation giants during the five-day show.
Loosely based on the hugely successful Eurocopter, the model of the light combat helicopter (LCH) will be loaded with a 20-mm gun, a 70-mm rocket and
an electro-optical pod.
HAL has been working on the ALH design for the last one-and-a-half years and is expected to roll out the prototype in 2008.
Explaining the rationale behind the LCH, HAL chief Ashok Baweja said: 'We want an attack helicopter that operates at altitudes of over 15,000 feet.
When you are operating at such altitudes you must have lighter machines. You can't have a 10-tonne helicopter operating at those heights.'

Pope AFB in NC will have an air show this Sept or Oct. They are also a BRAC base so this should be one of or the last air show before they become Pope
Army Airfield.
From what my friends are telling me this should be a very big air show because of BRAC. I will ask around for more specifics, but i'm hoping it will
be worth checking out. I'll keep you all posted.
