Does the Gripen or F-35 have a BVR capability?

The recent benchmark against upgraded versions of the Sukhoi flanker family:

BVR Combat Rating

F-22: 91%

Typhoon: 82%

Rafale: 50%

F-15: 43%

F-18+: 25%

F-18: 21%

F-16: 21%

Uhhh


Yeah, they both have BVR capabilities.


Could you please explain where this 'rating' has come from, and explain what the data represents.

The percentage represents the chance of a kill that the aircraft has.

That's the DERA study, as we all know it should be taken with a grain of salt. It was done a long time ago and the weaponry, specs, and avionics/sensors of the fighters involved have changed dramatically. The reason the F-35 is not on there is because it was done before the JSF program, not because the F-35 does not have BVR capability.

T'was done 15+ years ago IIRC!


I wouldn't pay too much heed to that study Shadowraven - although I've seen people state elsewhere that the studies have been updated I wouldn't judge them too much. The USAF for instance admitted it would have to review its procedures after Cope India when presented with new and novel tactics, so why should the DERA study be any different.
