Question: When someone gets a "warning"

When someone gets a "warning" tag on their account, how long does it remain? Does it just stay there for as long as they are a poster or is there a waiting period before it is removed? I know that after three warnings you are banned,but I was just curious as to whether it is three warnings period, or if there is a "time limit" on it. I certainly don't plan to get one, but I was just wondering about the process.
