Wednesday, officials in London ordered two British Airway jets to land in London's Heathrow Airport for radiation testing in the ex-spy Alexander Litvinenko investigation. The two planes tested positive for traces of radiation, and were immediately taken out of use, and a third was sent for further testing. All three airliners were on route from Moscow to London. Officials have not said whether or not the radiation found in the Jets are related to the polonium-210 which killed Litvinenko. The airliner is now contacting over 33,000 passengers who flew with the three jets and asking them to come forward to be tested as well.

LONDON - Officials found traces of radiation on two British Airways jets, and the airline appealed Wednesday to tens of thousands of passengers who flew to Moscow or other cities to come forward — the latest twist in the inquiry into the poisoning death of a former Russian spy.

The airline said the "risk to public health is low," adding that it was in the process of contacting tens of thousands of passengers who flew on the jets.

Two planes at London's Heathrow Airport tested positive for traces of radiation and a third jet was taken out of service in Moscow awaiting examination, British Airways said.

This is scary. Officials wont say if this is related to Litvinenko's death, but if it isn't, it means someone had material giving off radiation on the plane, and over 30,000 passengers didn't even know they were being exposed to it. It's strange that they don't test passengers for radiation, along with other explosive materials, like US airports do.

So, whats worse, the fact that radiation was smuggled onto the planes without being detected, or that Russia is basically getting away with murder without a peep of protest from the civilized world?

Dang, I'd better not say stuff like that, they might assasinate me.

Why do you find this scary?

It cannot pass through the skin, and must be ingested or inhaled into the body to cause damage.

And because the radiation has a very short range, it only harms nearby tissue.

A little reading sure goes a long way.

If the investigation shows that the radiation is one in the same that killed the ex-spy, then there's going to be some heavy explaining done by British Airways on how it got there, and if one of their own employees had been in on it too. I can't imagine how many lawsuits they will face if other passengers were also infected.

If Putin is to blame for all of this, I wonder how Bush will react.

If it's the same one that poisoned the ex-spy, the fact that it was found in two Jets, and possibly a third means it was planted in the Jet by an outside source to ensure that it kills whoever they intend to die. I don't see how he could have ingested the poison and contaminated 2 or 3 jets.

Hello?

William Gelletly, professor of physics at the University of Surrey, said: "Polonium-210 is very unlikely to have contaminated any staff who treated Mr Litvinenko or anyone who came in contact with him since they would have had to ingest or breathe in the contaminated fluids from his body."

Source.

There is next to no chance of anyone else being infected.

It is also present in tobacco.

How many people do you think must ingest it per day? This was a targeted attack, perpetrated by someone who obviously knew what there were doing. Ex KGB agent Mr Litvinenko was given a "major dose", and it is highly unlikely that anyone else will suffer any ill effects.

I'm assuming you didn't read my previous reply. Even if the ex-spy ingested the radiation, it still does not explain how not one, but two jets are exposed to it.

Perhaps they sent two assasins to do this, one as a back up, and thats why its two planes. Or perhaps one flight brought the assasin in, the other brought him out. Though I don' t see why he'd bring the material with him on the flight back. Seems like it'd be better to dump it?

Then again, if the russians assasinate a russian in england, thats one thing, the british can over look it, but if they then dump this deadly material in england, THEN they might not tolerate it.

That sounds very likely to what occurred. If and when the ex-spy flew on the first flight and didn't come into contact with the radiation, then it's likely the assassin could have followed him to the next flight back to Russia to poison him again. Though, if the third jet is also found to be contaminated, then it would seem that Russia may have sent three separate assassins on three separate flights, without knowing which one the ex-spy would have boarded.

Update:

There are now 5 Boeing jets which are under investigation, including the last 3 initially inspected for radiation. Officials have not yet determined how many more jets are contaminated, but have found that the new jets in question are both from Russian airliners. The fourth jet is from the Russian airline Transaero, and the fifth by a separate airliner. Officials have determined that 12 of the 24 venues have tested positive for radiation.

news.yahoo.com
LONDON - Traces of radiation have been found at a dozen sites in Britain during the investigation of the poisoning of a former Russian spy, Home Secretary John Reid said Thursday.

Reid also told Parliament that five jets are being investigated for possible radiation contamination. On Wednesday, British Airways said two of its Boeing 767s at London's Heathrow Airport tested positive and a third was grounded in Moscow awaiting examination.

The fourth aircraft, a Boeing 737 operated by the Russian airline Transaero, arrived at Heathrow airport Thursday morning, Reid said, but he gave no further details.

There is something fishy about this. Now with 5 jets under investigation, all coming from Russia and landing in the Heathrow airport, I suspect there's more to this than the ex-spy's death. They haven't released the name of the traces of radiation material that is being found, but it seems to me like a group might have been smuggling radioactive material out of Russia, knowing well of the faults in their security check points in Russia's airports.

I think maybe Someone from Russia has been smuggling radioactive material into the USA via international flights for future use and the spy was possibly apart of it and they killed him with the very substance they were smuggling in the USA.That is too many planes that tested positive. It looks like alot more than is being said right now.

Anyone else think this is a double spin story? That this could have been done to 'frame' Putin? I know he's a bit of an arse but would a russian do something this obvious? This does not look like the work of Russian Intelligence to me.

AND - My glow in the dark watch is probably giving off more radiation than that plane ever did. Again, the media blow the whole thing out of all proportion just because it makes a story.

I think Russia is being set up over this issue. If they were that keen on disposing of someone then why not just have him die in an auto accident or get knocked down in a hit and run accident. Why bother to poison someone causing a slow death allowing them to point a finger at the alleged conspirators? It just doesn't seem very likely IMO.

As already addressed, I think the fact of multiple planes testing positive for radiation is the biggest problem.

If someone(s) smuggling radioactive material on international flights... we should all be worried.

( Hmmmm, wondering who would need radioactive materials....)

You guys raise good points. An issue such as finding radioactive material coming from planes out of Russia would certainly pressure the west to take action against Putin.

What's strange is that there is now speculation that another Russian official was poisoned the same way.

Maybe another player that someone decided to shut down.
When you really look at the facts here is what I see.

multiple airplanes coming into the US found to be radioactive.
multiple Russian spy's found poisoned by same radioactive material.
The radioactive material is almost certain to be in the US already since traces were found on the planes in the US.
I think they need to check the flight logs and manifests and look for anyone from Russia or anyone that might be suspicious and follow that lead to find out what the hell is going on.

London, Moscow, Barcelona, Frankfurt, Athens.. are in the US?

Really, the most likely explanation for the radiation showing up on multiple planes on the London / Moscow route, is that the poisoned guy was travelling on them. They went looking for radiation on the planes he'd flown in and they found it. It's very unlikely anyone would try to smuggle radioactive material through airport screening and they seem to be talking about trace amounts that he left behind, probably by coughing or sneezing, or even picking his nose.

Boy I love flying commercial...
