I found this to be pretty cool. Before the SR-71 a version of the craft was built to carry three long range air to air missiles. It was built to intercept supersonic bombers. To bad they never built many of them.

There are many different speeds at which they can fly. In this case it seems that the missile would have to travel at mach 3 to keep up.

The Hughes AIM-47 Falcon (originally designated GAR-9) had a top speed of Mach 4, meaning it could outpace the F-12 when it came to intercepting the M-4, Tu-95, and M-50/M-52. The AIM-47 was also the intended armament of the North American F-108 Rapier, which got as far as a mock-up but was canceled in September 1959 due to budget cuts.
