It just goes to show that we can't catch them all - there was no previous warning that this little monster was on its way, so it certainly makes one think twice. After all, statistically we have more chance of being hit by a killer extinction level meteor than wining the lottery!

"In what sounds like a scene from the 70s movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind, people in South Australia and western Victoria have deluged police and media with reports of a spectacular meteor sighting..."

I wish I could have seen it.

I've seen one bolide like that, about 10 years ago.
I was on my way home from work at about 3am. Stopped at a stop sign.
And it crossed my field of view, my eyes bugged out. Green and sparkling, with a huge tail of reddish and yellowish light.

When I got home, the phone was ringing..I answered "meteor", instead of hello.
I knew it was my wife calling, from her job as a police dispatcher..They had a bunch of calls people swearing it had to have landed just over the hills.

Sounds like it was pretty intense.

Oddly enough, two nights ago on my way home from work I saw a small one leave a long, green streak heading north. That only hung around for about 15 seconds, but it was pretty good for being in city lights.
