Putting aside the theories about hidden secret knowledge about the existance of ailens for the moment, what would happen if someday SETI picks up a signal ? Would there be an announcement from the UN or would George Bush or whoever is President at the time step out onto the White House Lawn and break the news? What would the protocols be?
Personally i think there should be an announcement by the UN, perhaps with a joint statement by the world leaders. And then i will crack open the bubbly and cheer for the world will never be quite the same again.

I personally think that SETI would announce that they had received a signal from space. Then word would get around to the people that this had happened. After a relatively short time, someone from the government would step in and make it look like it was nothing.

Even if right now there is nothing going on with the government and "aliens", they wouldn't tell us anything until they absolutely had to. Just like all of the breakthroughs in history of geniuses like Tesla that were silenced because the fed couldn't make a buck off of it.

I think it would be the UN that would address the world on the situation of there being signals being received or life out there in the universe.

Reagan made some rather oblique statements about an alien presence threatening the Earth, and pulling world powers together.
I wonder what he knew, and why he said these things..

First, I think the news would sweep through a very small higher echilon of the scientific community, and as such news of the contact would trickle through into the internet, forcing SETI to tip their hand and announce that they have discovered an alien signal.

Though SETI doesn't report to the United States government, I think they would contact the government before releasing the details of their findings. After the government was able to view the data for a time, the details would surface either by an official joint release of SETI and the US governement, or by SETI alone.

After the information is released, ATS will quickly cash in, creating a thread on how the US government created the signal in an attempt to keep _____ from finding out about ________. (fill in the blank with whatever conspiracy is your favorite.)

The comment to Spielberg (IIRC) was at a screening of ET. He said, you don't know how close to the truth this is. Kind of an odd statement.

if seti was smart they would let the public know first because theres a good chance if they let the feds know then it would end right there and none of us would ever know.

or if we did get contact, you can bet our dumbass government here in america would be the ones to break the news. i mean after all our government is experts at giving the middle finger to the rest of the world. like that one guy said, the best way to come out with this info would be a joint statement from the UN. but i know that wouldnt happen. it would be a statement from the oval office, and then bush would proclaim himself leader of the world.

I think they won't say a word... It would break too many people's beliefs and everyone would start doubting their religion... which may cause a world wide problem (IMO).

And believe me there are a lot of people (if not millions) who believe that humans are the ONLY race in the whole universe. does Galilio Galilai ring a bell (or maybe everybody believed the world was flat)?

Copernicus and Galileo didn't cause a world wide problem, unless you consider the rise of the Enlightenment as a 'problem'.

Seeing a signal from SETI? The first reaction from most people will be: "what are they saying?" Answer: "We have no idea." People: "Whatever. Let me know when you have alien porn online."

People will talk about it for a couple of weeks, and then most will forget about it, since they still have to deal with their real life.

If on the other hand the announcement is, "We've tracked 10,000 huge ET vessels on an intercept course with Earth, ETA three weeks. We have received no response to our transmissions.", then yeah there'd be plenty of panic.

For good reason.

Well they said that Galileo's theory was wrong and far from the truth, and insisted the world was flat and locked him up for years because his discovery, and after many years(don't know how many years) Everyone accepted it... well Galileo wasn't the first person to discover the earth was round... and I don't want to offend you but enlightenment is bs to me, please don't talk to me about religion to me (don't take it the wrong way)

Seems as though it's been leaking out for awhile, something like 61% of Americans believe UFOs exist. Sooner or later the press are going to completely ignore the No Talk silent UFO subject curfew and report on -- ongoing UFO reports where there is collaborating witnesses and video.

I would guess the United Nations may be the multi-body to announce it. With all the governmental distrust in many places, it may well be a multi-government body that would have to make the formal announcement.

Agreed, any other way of letting the truth come open would be a total waste of time and useless, and quickly they would shut the mouth of whoever tries anything. Any1 ever thinked before that SETI could be a gvt side project, or could be monitored by the same? i go for the second option, with no doubt. SETI is a world wide know PUBLIC project, if u wanna catch those signals without being monitored, you'd have to build secretly another *better* and *hidden* SETI away from any public knowledge, and even like this, i find very difficult that you could bypass the gvt, i think they could monitor your attempts.

The best thing there's to do is exactly that, everyone in the world has to put more pressure, the major cards (the gvt) can't fight back against 6 billion people ;] You see there so many countries that are opening a relationship with their public about the UFO subject, declassifieing secret files and reports. I for one live in Brazil, and here things are opening up slowly, but they are. Not long ago, The owner/editor of our UFO Magazine (www.ufo.com.br) A.Gevaerd has visited military installations with his colleagues with the people from the press and tv and they showed it in television all the procedure. One month later they had 400 declassified documents and printed on a special edition of the magazine. It was about the brazillian's most know case of UFO phenomena "Operation Saucer" (1977) all open wide to the public, straight from the buildings of CINDACTA
but that's CRAP compared to what they may hold there and other military locations aswell and i believe is the same in the US. Surely they will use a filter of content and a release-basis acording to the level of certain documents.

But well, very much sorry for getting off topic before. But i seriously think that the human race has 2 options for contact: 1> Evolution of mind/conscious/spirit. We have so much to grow yet for them to show interest in making contact aswell for us to absorb everything calm and nice. 2> Force the gvt till they can't stand anymore, but that also would result in mass hysteria/shock, cos we're not ready.

Clarification is necessary.

All educated people even by Antiquity (classical Greek & Roman society) knew that the Earth was approximately spherical. Aristotle summarized the evidence known somewhere in 350 BC or so.

Galileo was aggressively anti-Catholic, and he used his observations confirming heliocentricity (sun as center of solar system) plus the observation of moons of Jupiter as a political cudgel to bash the Catholic power structure. He was oppressed for that reason, essentially for political insubordination.

Nevertheless, anybody who would remotely be describable at that time as an intellectual or scientist ("natural philosopher") immediately recognized that Galileo was correct and his observations and theories were well known.

The "Enlightenment" I am talking about is the 17th and 18th century movements towards rationality, which were distinctly anti-clerical in nature. The consequences included people like Adam Smith, John Lock, Thomas Jefferson, and the U.S. and French revolutions.
