Pelosi In a Pickle Between Hastings and Harman

Soon-to-be Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is between a rock and a hard place. It seems she is about to learn another lesson in making tough decisions. At stake is the Chairmanship of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Currently, the ranking Democrat on that committee is Jane Harman (D-CA), but word is that Pelosi has promised the Congressional Black Caucus to award the chairmanship to Alcee Hastings, (D-FLA). The problem is, Pelosi voted to impeach Hastings of conspiracy to accept bribes when he was a federal judge. The Senate, btw, convicted Hastings of the charges. Pelosi and Harman have had issues between themselves. Pelosi has charged Harman with being too centrist, and for Harman's support of some of Bush's policies.

If Democrats win control of the House next week, Nancy Pelosi's first test as speaker will arrive long before the 110th Congress convenes. Her choice to head the House intelligence committee -- unlike other House committees, this one is left entirely up to the party leadership -- will speak volumes about whether a Speaker Pelosi will be able to resist a return to paint-by-numbers Democratic Party interest-group politics as usual.

Pelosi is in a box of her own devising. The panel's ranking Democrat is her fellow Californian Jane Harman -- smart and hardworking but also abrasive, ambitious and, in Pelosi's estimation, insufficiently partisan on the committee. So Pelosi, once the intelligence panel's ranking Democrat herself, has made clear that she doesn't intend to name Harman to the chairmanship.

The wrong decision, in my view, but one that's magnified by the unfortunate fact that next in line is Florida Rep. Alcee Hastings. In 1989, after being acquitted in a criminal trial, Hastings was stripped of his position as a federal judge -- impeached by the House in which he now serves and convicted by the Senate -- for conspiring to extort a $150,000 bribe in a case before him, repeatedly lying about it under oath and manufacturing evidence at his trial.

Nancy Pelosi has promised to make this session of Congress the most "corruption-free" session ever. But how can she do this if she nominates a corrupt ex-federal judge who was stripped of his position? She has already lost her first key test as Speaker by losing her bid to have Jack Murtha, who carries his own ABSCAM baggage, as House Majority Leader to Steny Hoyer, another political rival. Of course, there is no rule that says she must nominate either of these people, and she may just take that way out.

What about a republican-democrat-free congress? It would be great for the democracy. Everybody voted against the republicans, and not for the democrats... Anyway, this decision will be important and the effects that it would have on the congress... very interesting.

I think Harman has been off the table for a while, Pelosi just doesn't like her at all.

If she makes Hastings the chairman, she will have no credibility in reforming ethics in the House.

This is scary.

Putting aside any political party garbage for the moment... consider it this way.

The guy took bribes, was caught, was impeached by the House, and was found guilty and stripped of his position by the Senate.

The guy is a crook and shouldn't be in office representing anyone. How can any self respecting voter put a man in Congress who has already been proven to take bribes. Perhaps his opponent was Kevin Federline...

But, the man was elected by the people, we must accept that.

But to give him a leadership position?? And not just any leadership position, but one that involves TOP SECRET INTELLIGENCE??? One that involves information that holds lives in the balance? To give that position to a man who will happily sell out for a hundred grand?

This is how you "clean up Congress" Ms. Pelosi? Shame on her and if this goes through shame on the Democratic party. If this goes through I do not see how anyone in the new leadership can claim to be better than the corruption they intended to clean up.

More of the same. More proof that there is no more Democrat vs. Republican, there is only Politician vs. Citizen.
