Please Do Not Evade the Automatic Censors.

<<  1    2  >>

Topic started on 19-11-2006 @ 06:56 PM by Umbrax

ATS is designed so that certain words are automatically replaced with a number symbol (#). Please do not circumvent these censors with the use of alternative misspellings.

Please take a few moments to review these related links.

The effort of our default censors is not to prevent certain words from gracing your computer screen, it's to keep our domain out of the automatic domain scoring software, and on as many computer screens as possible. I've seen this in action too, a company I know of cannot access some other conspiracy sites because their IT manager employs these filtering tools on their firewall -- but they can get to ATS!

So embrace the censors. They are actually part of the many reasons for our success.

HOWEVER: Members attempting to bypass the censors with "Cu#se" style words or "Cvrse" style alternate spellings will receive a warning and ATS points deduction.

If you can't post a reply without cursing at another member, it may be best to hold back and say nothing.
I'm sure I could take anything dished out towards me, but we also have many members, some young and impressionable, that deserve the courtesy of being able to communicate their ideas without vulgar abuse.

One of the main things that attracted me to ATS was the civility enforced on the community by the mods. The last time I checked we had about 45 staff on the boards, and with the help of the members, the boards keep on topic without the unnecessary vulgarity.

No one posting here should feel the need to by-pass the censors. You should be able to get your point across without lowering yourself to profanity, even if you veil it with !#*@.

The net has enough filth that people can search for, we don't need it on ATS........

So are you saying that this automatic software looks for alternate spellings of curse words?

I understand the concept of wanting the domain to score well on search engines - whatever protocols they might use for the purposes of ATS staff - but I would like to know if you are saying that even misspelled curse words are searched as well.

If this is true, then what are the Amigos going to do about the policy of words that circumvent this? Not everyone uses vulger language as insults, but just as figures of speech such as "cats ass". The word itself depends on how it is used. Technically it can be a mule or someones rear. Personally I don't use other words that most people consider more offensive than this, but all this is relative to ones own interpretation or in ATS' case seemingly up to the actual spelling of what is bad and not its connotation.

For myself, it isn't a big jump to exclude certain words or spellings from my ATS vocabulary, but I am sure that for others it may be difficult due to the fact that they don't see the harm in the what they are saying in a literal sense. In short, this is like saying "do not make a lying statement on ATS", and then no one can make an expression that says "it rains cats and dogs". Words have a definition based upon their context.

Are you saying we cannot use any language that is considered offensive to scoring software in any context or does it actually figure out if a text is describing a female canine or someone discrediting some woman?

ben circumventing the censors changes the word so that it can be read.
If I type #, a symbol appears.
If I alter one letter, the word appears in its altered state, for all to see the intent of the poster. This circumvention often appears with the slang for excrement and the "f" word.

To use yor example, "cats ass" is neither profanity nor censor circumvention.

(blink) Oops.

I occasionally use profanity to emphasize a point, specifically in reference to something that is just flat out blatantly ignorant or false (the word rhymes with "fullpit"), but always censor myself with a dash in place of the "i". Not because I really felt I had to, or because I was attempting to evade any censors, but rather as a courtesy held over from the days of BBSes (bulletin board systems), and to keep down the instances of confrontation with mods regarding language.

I guess I never really considered that it would be damaging to ATS, in the context I was using it, it's just a phrase we use in Texas (though sometimes we use "horse" instead of "bull"), even in the professional workplace, often even to clients. It's just one of those phrases that is ingrained I guess, and at some point in one's life it ceases to be considered profanity and becomes more of an adjective. Not that it gets used every day in conversation, because we don't generally cotton to filthy mouths, but there are few things funnier than watching an old man listen to some youngster rattle off something inane, and him dryly reply with "Boy, that's the biggest load of (rhymes with "fullpit") I ever heard."

I guess you could call it "Texas Charm" at it's finest.

I had no idea that doing this would somehow thrust ATS into the realms of the unreachable depths of "not browsable from work". Really. The idea that I would have to go the entire workday without ATS starts me twitching nervously. So, I sincerely apologize, as I fear I might have contributed to this problem at least a half-dozen times or so since I joined.

That doesn't mean I'm against personal insults, I find it primitive to insult an opponent, it just shows that you have a lack of argument. And, dear god yes, delete evil links that lead to porno sites and the like, I hate advertisments, especially links to websites that give you viruses.
So, good job mods, I haven't yet caught one of those links, obviously you are doing your job, I'm happy. Wow, this is like, the first time I congratulate someone for doing their job right... the world is doomed! The end is near, run away!!!

You may need to re-read the first post in this thread which explains the reason for the censors.

You guys know when and how I post and that is that. I don't use swearing constantly to get my point across. If I do swear, it's usually something that you hear everyday out in the Real World, but not on ATS. If I have something to say, I say it without the cussing and fussing. If you agree with me on certain things, I respect that. If you do not agree with me on things, I respect that too. It's just people that insist on swearing for them to try and get there point across. That's not me, and that hasn't been me for as long as I can remember.

Peace out for now!!!

Gimme.

As much as I hate censorship, the ATS reasoning is at the very least valid.

So, if I come right out and 'say' the word, the automatic censors will kick in and use some symbol for it........? But if I 'self edit' as someone mentioned, using the symbol myself.......I cause ATS to be banned by other censoring software?

Sigh......I thought I was being good. I never intended harm....(that's the point of using them euphemisms, or so I thought.)

Thanks for the fuller explanation......just getting 'do not evade the censors' snarled at me was a bit confusing, cause I didn't know I was!
