Not to be a jerk, but I think your friend is lying. These rods (if they exist) fly at over 185 miles an hour. The animal would have been smushed when it hit his mouth. Sorry.

Pretty good video. Those things might just be real? The lens flare explanation is so ridiculous. I'll file that with swamp gas.

This is most likely the best thing I've seen on rods. This debuks them incredibly hard.

"5. There are many skeptics, of course, who have denounced both your methods and your findings. Can they be convinced?
J.E.: Most people don't know that I am a professional film and video editor with extensive credits and experience. And in doing these tests, I came up with a protocol that basically washes away the insect-bird theories skeptics also brought out. With this protocol, which I call "sky fishing," there is no way that anyone can misidentify all that is videotaped. Skeptics like Joe Nickel of Skeptical Inquirer don't claim insects anymore because of the obvious, but they have alluded to a hoax. Kal Korff and Bob Shell, however, continue to call rods mis-filmed insects. This is simply because they don't know any better. Needless to say, the new Smoking-Gun Evidence video shows it all."

Im watching the video right now. Freaking amazing... The bug theory is complete bunk, I think. Skeptics need to watch this video.

People will sometimes claim anything just to make believers out of people. The guy who supposedly blew this bug theory out of the water wouldn't happen to be selling a book now would he?

I'm not even going to waste my time looking for this video, which by the way, in your haste to contradict us, you've neglected to link to. I've more important research to devote my time to - research involving phenomenon less convincingly debunked.

As an aside, a quote taken from a section of this site describing how to "capture" rods on film sums this thread up nicely:

"set up your video camera on a tripod near your home or where there is some other kind of overhang."

Exactly where bugs like to hang out.

Apparently you're also supposed to aim your camera into a ray of sunlight (which if you look back to page 1, you'll see that that's how I caught my first "rods" and how I found out that they were just bugs), and set your cam to it's maximum telefoto setting. Precisely the kind of conditions required to cause fast moving small insects to appear as "rods".

I kinda have to a agree with the bug theory, and debunkers. I've always thought that these rods, were simply insects, which have motion blur. I will try a see this video u guys are talking about, since it seems interesting. Anyone have a link to the rod video?

Many insects secrete toxins to keep from being eaten. It's a defense mechanism. I've had insects fly into my mouth while riding motorcycles and I remember on at least one occasion getting burned on the lip and in the back of the throat.

The guy had an unidentified insect fly in his mouth, it secreted a toxic slime and it burned him. He called it a rod, so what! He was traumatized by it and his imagination is running wild.

IMO it was an insect of some kind and I'm sure he'll be fine....physically that is....

This thing is being blown out of proportion. Also, I don’t see any evidence of lying here, just a little dramatic assumption.

People that post one line responses of “liar” and “hoax” are not adding anything to the discussion.

No but they are demonstrating a degree of frustration that I fully understand. You've got to see that after a while it gets a bit tiring explaining the science to people who refuse to listen because they want to believe so desperately.

I've taken photos of bugs and ended up with rods, but they don't want to hear that. I can take a photograph of a bug in front of them then show them the picture on my digital camera's viewing screen and they still believe in rods!

The man obviously choked on some type of creature and it sounds like a strange one indeed. Whether any of the creatures have ever been caught on film or whether they are the rods people photograph is another matter entirely. Even if the photos are all just bugs this man's testimony is some sort of evidence that something strange flew into his mouth.

There are nets called 'mist nets' which are very fine and they are placed up in the air to capture birds. I'm wondering if such fine mist nets could be used over a wide area to try and capture one of these flying squid creatures? It certainly would be the greatest discovery of the modern age if one was caught and put on show.

So, that's an excuse to pick on someone? You know, there are people out there that don't have as much information as we may have. People that don't surf the net or keep up with many things. We have no idea how much information this guy has on the subject. For all we know he saw a documentary on TV a few years ago and that's the extent of his knowledge. So this thing happens and his mind snaps back to that TV show. He identifies an unknown the only way he can think to.

Some stories on ATS have very obvious earmarks of hoax right from the start and if people paid closer attention they could learn how to identify those tip-offs instead of just guessing and attacking.

I’m pretty good at picking up hoaxes and made up stories and I would just like to know what is so obvious about this story to these one line posters?

I am in no way saying that this is a true story but it's not an obvious hoax either. In these cases you have to sit back and give out rope.

On the same token, ignorance is no excuse for ignoring the facts when they are given to you. Anyone with a camera has the ability to prove that rods are a load of bunk.

These people, in my opinion, gave up their right to be taken seriously the moment they started refusing to put opposing theories to the test. They're a bunch of deluded fantasists.

I don't know guys, most bugs I don't think fly as fast as some of the images caught on film. Provided the films are authentic, that would at least put this phenomena in the "unexplained" category. The word "bunk" gets thrown around very easily in this forum, like the "explain all" for anything which challenges ones beliefs.

I've looked at these pictures, and films. Unless bugs wings are flapping differently than what I'm thinking they flap, those pictures don't seem to be your ordinary bug that we are familiar with. To perhaps create a similar rod image with a bug blur you would seem to need to have a bug which flaps its wings like this (one wing up, while the other wing is down, and vice versa). I don't know if this workes in flight.

Oh I see! So since this guy didn't first do extensive research before he told his friend what happened to him then he is just asking for both barrels. Give me a break!

That attitude is what keeps people from posting at all.

There are two distinct ways to address this post
The first, and probably most obvious is the pornographic approach. let's just say that there are all kinds of websites that already address people choking on "Rods". There is facialabuse.com or gaggirls.com or deepthroat.com etc... THIS site DOES NOT address those types of problems! She should have a conversation with her boyfriend about this problem.

On the other hand, if you are discussing the phenomenon called "Rods" as flying entities, then I can assure you that your friend DID NOT choke on one as they are completely debunked.

Wikipedia link to debunked rods

Rods are Insects!
Rods Explained!

I could on and on for hours with links like these! I have a friend who is a cinematographer who has shown me dozens of "Rods" on film that are nothing more than insects (I once believed that they were real as well!). I have seen the truth and the light - why are others not seeing this?
