Read about the policy that is in place about ID card use at this location. Remember that this policy is posted in the library and it is in place for the students security. Those who fail to read these policies are the ones that get in trouble. If you fail to read a speed limit sign what is your defense in court when you get a speeding ticket?

Don't be in a rush to judge if you don't know all the facts.

regardless a taser isnt a command tool, its an incapacitating tool. they had him under control. There was no need for a taser. When they say its used for non compliance it for people who are freaking out breaking stuff and refuse to stop. Not some guy sitting there refusing to show ID. You strong arm some one like that out. If he starts to fight THEN you tase him. Just because he wont stand up does not give you the right to taser him.

Okay to ever who has taken the cops side...

First thing. Think of it. Your muslim and since 9/11 you are getting pulled over all the time and getting chased by cops just do to your culture cause you might be a terrorist. He was LEAVING when the cops grabbed him. So he said don't touch me, they obviously continued to try and grab him then he screamed DON'T TOUCH ME. One thing the cops have no right to touch you. Unless you did something wrong they do not have the right to touch you. Then it sounds for me they asked him for id. he said he was leaving. I think he sat down or something. If he sat down have you ever thought that maybe his ID WAS IN HIS #ING BAG. Then they ask him to stand up. I heard him say one second...one second. Btw they were security guards not cops. Rent-a-cop basically. Then they TASER HIM. Only reason a police officer has to taser someone is if the person has a weapon. So they taser him and continue to ask him to get up.

Okay what alot of you do not understand is how much a taser hurts. I used to do martial arts and one day we brought a cop in to tase us with his taser. It was a lower voltage taser but it HURTS not really bad but you go stiff for a bit. Police power tasers ARE POWERFUL. The average person can't move right for at least a minute.

It sounds like torture. First making it so the guy can't move then asking him to stand then zapping him again.

If I saw the whole thing happening I would attack the police. They had no right to do what they did.

Failure to comply and produce ID is not valid reason to be assaulted with a potentially deadly weapon (potentially deadly in regard to not knowing one's medical history). I would have thought this is a good reason to take into custody and question but not to inflict pain.

So for the time being it is tasering- will the next step in a paranoid USA be TERMINATION ?

Far fetched you may say...only a matter of time.

What really pees me off is that my country follows the USA's lead...how pathetic does that make us ?

This is exactly public torture. So if you object anything the police officer (god) says to you, he taser you... NAZI. If a police officer would do that to my son, if I would have one, I would have sue him, and if I couldn't, I would have a serious talk with him.

I'm sure this kind of thing happen at least 1 or 2 times everyday in the US and probably some DIE from it. And I suppose some people will support this? Kill someone because he wasn't showing his ID?? Stupid sheep, if you don't see a police state, you deserve it.

(potentially deadly in regard to not knowing one's medical history)
Sorry, but there's already at least 1500 people who died from it since 3 years, in the US alone.

An Iranian-American UCLA student was shot by UCLA'S UCPD November 14th 2006, because he could not show his Student ID. He was shot 5 times with a taser gun. Police threatened to shoot students who got too close. The Student yelled out that he had a medical condition, but the cops kept shooting. Don't let the UCPD get away with this!

A large amount of Protesters should show up before 11PM and sit-in when they check ID every night until the UC Regents dissolve the UCPD. Don't be a fool and do it all by yourself.

PROTEST PLANED at Noon on Friday November 17, 2006 on Kirchoff Steps at UCLA.

The thing I like the most about this is that the kid in question just became a martyr and just became the most popular kid on campus there from this. Man, those cops really ****ed up and hopefully the student body makes them pay hell for this.

You don't have a reason for being there, you gotta go...period!!

It was a school Library..maybe he was the to study?

If this dude would have killed somebody, then everybody would have cried, "Why didn't the police do something about him, they should have asked for ID,"

Why, because his name is Mostafa Tabatabainejad he could be a terrorist or a suicide bomber? Are you that scared of Muslims that you actually believe that what officers did was justifiable, just because there is a chance he could "kill us"? If he was a white guy from America would you say the same thing?

There were atleast 5 officers in the librar, who could have quite easily dragged him out of there..that is if he had actually done anything wrong, which he hadn't, since he was quite willing to leave from what I could tell.

Tazers are non-lethal, props to the cops for trying at least to protect us!!!

Man, that poor guy was tasered atleast 5 times, was screaming in pain, and he did NOTHING wrong and you are praising the cops? Heartless man.

Justice will not be served if these cops aren't all fired.

I've never been tasered but I've been tagged with a stun gun and yes they hurt, and its a very uncomfortable sensation...from experience i would call multiple shocks to the guy as torture.

Tasers can kill perfectly healthy people too and do all the time. Well over 200 deaths this year from the use of a taser by US cops alone. The problem with any forign electrical current entering the heart is that it can, if unfortunantly timed right between the electrical impulses to make the heart beat, confuse the nerves and actually not pump the heart at all. Even a healthy person with what's concidered less than lethal current entering their heart can have their hearts stall up permentantly if the timing is right. Cops know this but take the chance alot of times they bet wrong and the healthy guy dies from heart failure. Usually in circumstances where the taser was an improper to downright unlawful escallation of force.

The cops can't legally taser anybody for being uncomplient unless the person has escallated the force in return to justify using a taser. Ie.. you start throwing punches the cop punches back or tries to restrain you, he can't phsically so then they have to consider using other methods to calm you enough to arrest you. If nothing after a reasonable amount of time and effort calms the person enough to be placed into the back of the car and be complient then they use a taser and only as a last resort. and only with a paramedic already dispatched and only while being observed by the highest available officer on duty. Whipping out the taser used to be a big deal for the cops now it's just another thing they abuse besides out trust.

I just called UCLA and Faxed them a angry letter calling for judicial action against the police officers involved. I also just sent out a letter and the link to the video through e-mail and on my myspace. I would encourage all of you to do the same.

Here's a sample... copy and paste if you wish to forward this on to others.

Hey kids, I'm posting this right now at 5:36 PM on Thursday because I just saw the most messed up things I've ever seen. This message isn't the normal fare you get from me, this one is important.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GO TO THIS LINK

As soon as he yelled "GET OFF ME"

He opened himself up to being tasered.
Did he deserve it? probably not. But he was resisting.
It was an option that the cops chose to use.

Nothing to do with ID. Nothing at all..it was about belligerence.

And yes, typically University police are real cops.

that doesnt warrant the use of an incapacitating device though. He yelled get off me, so what? i could yell "your an F'in moron you cops are scumbags" and that doesn't warrant a tasering. It does warrant people to view you as an ass, but no taser. What you say doesn't warrant a taser. Actions of violent defiance from a person you cannot otherwise stop, warrants a taser. Just because its less lethal doesnt mean go trigger happy, damn.

UCLA is a public institution greatly paid by tax dollars, although in recent years tuition has escalated out of reach of far too many people, requiring student loans for what did not in the past require them.

Knowledge is a most precious resource, and must be freely available. Libraries are a very important part of gaining knowledge. In the current atmosphere of stupidity, security and ignorance, hey what is going to happen?

It is no wonder that security out of proportion to any notion of probable cause, is becoming a public nuisance.

If a general strike at UCLA until these kinds of goons are removed would be useful, then people should awaken out of their delusions of separation.

Once again, the kid offered to leave thus making the whole point of what the cops were doing a success. The correct scenario would've gone
"You got ID?"
"No"
"You can't be here then"
"Okay... I'll leave"
"Thank you for not making my job difficult... have a nice day"

Where do the tasers come into that scenario? Where?

And where do the police putting their hands on the victim come into play here? Even if they asked him to leave and escorted him out which is why, why do they need to touch him? You can say for a search but at no point did a search happen in this.

And then to cap it off, the ridiculous pig in charge THREATENS OTHER STUDENTS!!!

once again in case you didn't see that

THREATENS OTHER STUDENTS!!!

Granted this kid who got tased could be the worst person on the face of the earth but in light of what happened, you have a kid screaming and crying in pain on the ground while three authority figures work him over and a crowd forms trying to figure out what's going on and stop the authority figures from hurting the student who's SCREAMING AND CRYING IN PAIN ON THE GROUND! Even if that person is the worse person in the world, that's ridiculous and anyone would try to stop that. But those trying to stop it GET THREATENED BY POLICE OFFICERS.

I'm sorry I'm usually neutral but anyone trying to justify this simply is an idiot.

Grimreaper.

I do think it was overkill. But is it SOP for that police department? I don't know.
I'm not sure the student will actually have a case. He screamed at the cop.

I didn't catch why the cops were there to start with. Was it in the story, or did I miss it?

ah, a random check..thats why they were there?

curious skeptic,

I found the video from the link you provided very so distressing that it made me cry. I can not believe they can do that to a student in public place, a library in a university in the USA.

But I am sending this link to all the major TV networks in Australia (we have tasers here too, unfortunately). I would hate for this to become a common practice in my country. You law enforcement agencies in the USA appear to be no better than those they accuse of being terrorists. Talk about hypocrisy.

I hope justice prevails for the victim of this blatant brutality.

Good luck with the protest

Screaming doesnt warrant tasing. If the kid was kicking and screaming fine, punching andscreaming fine, they couldn't keep him down as he destroyed the library fine. On PCP and freaking out while doing some violent action, go ahead.

Screaming because hes POed about being kicked out, does not warrant such an action. He did NOTHING physical, the cops got physical first. Uncalled for and they should be fired if nothing else.

There was no need to touch him if he was complying to leave. If he wasn't complying, you grab him and throw him out, whether hes screaming or not. If he starts to resist, you throw him on the ground and cuff him, then throw him out. Only when you cannot cuff him and you cannot restrain him does it warrant a taser shot.

Thanks man, I've posted my message on every forum where I think I have a good reputation. I don't like to spam forums that don't know me, soley for the purpose of spamming a message so I don't know how far my reach will be. So I encourage everyone to get the message out about this and do something.

Tomorrow when I go to school, one of my professors is a UCLA grad, I'm going to talk to him about what possible contacts he has there and see if I can do something about it from up here.

THE MAIN THING
Please get the message out and call, fax or e-mail about this. If you need to copy and paste a message to e-mail or post it was provided above. If you need contact info for those responsible for this, they're post above.

Let's not let this one go by unchecked. We can do something and make our voice heard.

How is that "abuse" of power?

The man CLEARLY disobeyed the officers when the officers KINDLY asked him to show ID. The officers didn't just go up to him and taser him, the kid freakin provoked them to.
Honestly, put your shoes in the shoes of the officers. WHAT in God's name can you do if the kid is completely disobeying your orders? They asked him to stand up like 10 times... he blatantly refused and verbally assaulted the officers. BTW, don't tell me you can't stand up after being tasered, thats a bunch of b.s.. Go watch some taser training videos, they can stand up compeltely fine.

That was a pathetic attempt by a pathetic liberal trying to "fight the establishment." Honestly, I don't see how anyone can side with this loser. He got what was coming.

Sigh... Wish I was there, I woulda tasered him a couple more times just to teach him a thing or two about respecting authority. You don't have to like the cops, but you had better respect them when all they are doing is THEIR JOB.

Best of luck with your protest.

Once again..I think the use of force was overkill.
But I am not sure any laws were broken.
How many people were in the library?

I didn't hear the part where he offered to leave..I'll have to play it again.

I notice that he is now an Iranian-American...why is that? Does that make it worse?
