IE7 problems

I installed internet explorer 7 two days ago, and there are several websites that I am now unable to connect to, and I don't know why. One other program I installed the same day was Peer Guardian 2, but when I close it, I still get the same problem, so I don't think it is responsible.


I get the following error:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:

Internet connectivity has been lost.
The website is temporarily unavailable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain.
If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section.

For offline users

You can still view subscribed feeds and some recently viewed webpages.
To view subscribed feeds

Click the Favorites Center button , click Feeds, and then click the feed you want to view.

To view recently visited webpages (might not work on all pages)

Click Tools , and then click Work Offline.
Click the Favorites Center button , click History, and then click the page you want to view.

Unfortunately, as is obvious, my internet connection is just fine.

In addition to the above not opening at all, many other websites open extremely slowly... ARGH!

I'm not really sure what to try, but I tried changing the phishing filter, tried accepting all cookies, tried disabling Peer Guardian, and no change was observed. I assume there must be some common thread between the sites I can see and the sites I cannot see, but I don't know what that is.

Oh, one other thing I tried was downloading a program from microsoft that emulates IE6 for certain websites that IE7 cannot see. That didn't help. (IE6 never gave me this problem)

Ohh, this is a common error. Millions around the world have come across this.

Thankfully, there is a very simple and quick way to fix it: Get Firefox!

btw, not sure what IP blockers there are for FF, but there are bound to be some good ones.

Yes I would suggest firefox, even just to rule out any DNS problems.

You could also uninstall and reinstall, and if there are still problems MS do offer product support.

I checked all of those links in both IE7 and FF--they all seemed to work fine, except for the wexclub (the site loads fine in both, but that particular link is busted.)

Perhaps the Peer Guardian is screwing things up?

Well there have been some rather significant hacker attacks on large numbers of websites the past two weeks. It was for data collection only, not phishing or anything nefarious. They were just checking to see just how easy it would be to "shut down the internet". A hacker group is doing it on their own so don't expect a news release confirming this.

Hmm, looks like problem solved. It apparently was the peer guardian program that I installed after all, and it was somehow working after I thought I had shut it down. There was a way to tell it not to block http, and then 99% of the ones it was blocking got through normally.
