Islamic Courts Union Free Foreign Ship Hijacked By Somali Pirates

Pirates recently hijacked a United Arab Emirates shipping vessel carrying charcoal. The Islamic Courts Union, a popular movement which has siezed control and restored peace and order of much of South and Central Somalia, stormed the ship, detained the pirates and subsequently freed the ship to be on its way. Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, the Union's executive council leader, has stated people who wish to harm the ICU's success were behind the act, but failed.



This group has expunged warlords, many allegedly funded by the US, from much of Somalia and established much order to the once Anarchic Muslim nation. Militant roadblocks which used to extort the citizens on a daily basis have been removed since they took power. Crimes have gone down as a result of swift justice. The sea and airports of Mogadishu have been opened this year for the first time in more than a decade. The group even initially sent out letters to many of the International organizations wishing to establish dialogue and diplomacy.

I believe they are getting much done for the greater good given their frugal resources and means of operation.

Yeah, when hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of coal and national income are stolen by rebels, it works. However when you want to criticize Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, you get akhmeded up the arse.

What are you implying with that remark Westpoint? Sharif Sheikh Ahmed is in fact one of the moderates of the Courts Union. He is a teacher and is a pretty straight guy from what I have researched. The main radical which is who the FBI are demonizing is Hassan Dahir Aweys. Frankly his strict conservative views are what I, and the White House disagree with.

However they are not attempting to overhrow the transitional Federal government as of yet and have even invited the Preisdent Yusuf to come to Mogadishu for some diplomacy.

What I am curious is what US troops are doing on the Somali Kenya border.

A number of US forces were seen around Kenyan border with Somalia as alleged by Ahmed Sa'ad, Union of Islamic Courts head for Lower Jubba provincial district of Dhobley near the Kenyan border.

Sa'ad has told Shabelle Radio in Mogadishu that American troops have several times arrived at the border between Kenya and Somalia, carrying out unspecified mission in the area.

Lets not forget that the CIA/Pentagon was paying the warlords as much as $100,000 a month before the ICU forced them out in July. The same warlrods that were kidnapping and murdering people randomly, raping women and girls at their will, extorting what little money from the citizens with an array of roadblocks all across the cities.

Frankly this action had nothing to do with Sharia law. Do you think if the American Coast Gaurd freed a hijacked vessel in the Carribean, it was the result of Sharia law?

It has more to do with enforcing law period. They are a dedicated group now focused on stabalizing the country and hopefully helping it rebuild for the future.

The big problem with this statement is that proponents of sharia law live in the past, as in they want things done they way ther were in 700AD when minds were first enslaved and people were first butchered by the muslim religion.

They cannot be said to be building for the future with such beliefs.

They're not going to rebuild the country for the future, they're going to suppress it and force it to be an islamic state, just like under the taliban. The idea that this is somehow good for the Somailis is ridiculous. These groups create order through the threat of massive violence, and the actual willingness to fanatically carry it out. They're not an improvement. Heck, mussolini got the trains to run on time, but who cared, he was still a dicator. These guys are even worse than musolini.

More like it shows how being able to force out the competition and suppress and dissent can work. This has nothign to do with 'proper application of islamic social law'. These guys are thugs, who are in charge because they beat up all the other thugs.

Arr, a fine job by the Somali's. After watching Black Hawk Down and seeing the violence in Somalia it's good to see them get their act back together.

And note for those curious: The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster does not consider these pirates to be the same as the FSM's chosen people. Thus I have no sorrow about these scurvy dogs going to the gallows.
