Instead of positing endless existences, and beings that populate other star-systems and/or dimensions, I make a simpler assumption that earthly
agents/agencies have some real fancy technological hardware, and can make the ordinary 'informed and educated' believe whatever is desired of them.
Occam's razor abhors the needless multiplications, and indicates that simplicity is best when faced with multiple choices. I see religion and
politics as two sides of one coin, and the game is heads you lose, tails it's game over, if you keep playing that particular game.
