A plan for Global Warming? Space Sun Shade.

Regardless of what you believe the cause of Global Warming may be, the fact is that it is happening and we need solutions to protect our planet.
University of Arizona astronomer Roger Angel may have come up with one way we could protect our home from Global Warming.

You mean I'm breathing in those metallic salts for nothing? This sucks fer sure.

This plan looks stupid, maybe they should make big sunglasses for the earth instead then at least we will look cool.

do you not think that it is far more detrimental to do something like this then to let the climate change...and nature take its course? WE are the ones that have to ADAPT.

Is that what you will tell your children or grandchildren as they suffer or even die from the effects of global warming? That they have to adapt?

The idea of the Space Sunshade is to save us in the event of a GW emergency. Were talking about saving lives here.

There are two scenarios for the outcome of Global Warming. The first is that we are edging closer to an ice age all the time and the more fresh water that is released from Ice Caps and Burgs can hypothetically do this. In this scenario the amount of arable land on earth will be cut in half.

In the other scenario of a Glacial Free earth, where the deserts are three times as large as they are today, the amount of arable land that will be available to Humanity will drop by roughly 70 %.

The First is expected to happen sooner or later anyways and there is not much we can do to stop it, but we may be able to slow it down. The last ice age almost killed us all. I'm not so confident that we'll survive the next one.

The other scenario isn't nearly as nightmarish due to the fact that we'll always have the option of using technology like this. Though using this stuff in excess would probably do more harm then good.

Well, considering that we can't really instantly stop and reverse
the effects that we've so far seen, I'm all for this idea.

Not only could it serve it's purpose, but they could create some
that reflect sunlight to parts of the world that sunlight does'nt
always hit, like in Northern Europe, where an idea for reflecting
sun there has already been put into the research phase.

That is going to use up a lot of tainted glass, so I guess we're going to build an International Space Factory linked to Earth by a space elevator?

Are these shades going to orbit around Sun, or Earth? Putting them into Earth orbit will use up a lot of resources, and also crowded the space around earth. A Sun orbit will requires these shades to be continueously pushed by rocket thrusters into a position between the Sun and earth, since they will orbit around the sun faster than Earth. Distance from the sun is also an important consideration since a closer distance to sun will use less shades, but involves more transportation that requires a lot of coordination and also has a faster orbit period. An orbit closer to Earth will use up more shades but maintainance is easier.

Nonetheless this kind of project is going to use up billions if not trillions of dollars(cheaper than Iraq War?), and we know where all this money is going. The riches(corporations) get richer, the poors get poorer.

It would have to absolutely gigantic to work. During solar eclipses the moon only shades a small swath of the Earth.

Its not very feasible, it would be a lot easier and we would have quicker results if we were to simply change they way we live our lives.

So you're saying that the tens of thousands(possibly hundreds of thousands) of Scientists, Engineers, Craftspeople and General laborers that would work on this project would be getting paid slave wages now?

Where would we be now without the Space Program again? Oh yeah, we wouldn't be talking right now that's for sure.

Also, it would only use massive resources and money if we make it out of materials on Earth. If we start mining the moon, the entire equation changes(plus we'd be setting up a whole new industry while we're at it).

Cool it, man. My point is as simple as it is - the biggest profiteers from such a program will be the same corporations that REFUSE to do anything about global warming and blatantly DENY it now.

And while you are fantansizing about how such a project will inject a boost and revitalize the economy, and introduces unimaginable technologies, don't forget about your fellow human beings who are starving in Africa, how millions in Asia are living off a dollar a day, how the wildlife is threatened with extinction ... ...

But I think you will, at least, agree that the ultimate solution is to cut down greenhouse emmision steeply right now.
