Can't fly in space? Send your name instead

Time is running out to get your name aboard one of two NASA probes bound for the far reaches of space.

NASA’s Dawn spacecraft [image] is taking moniker reservations for its June 2007 launch to study the asteroid Vesta before its 2014 arrival at Ceres [image]—which I think still counts as a dwarf planet though I’ll settle for big, round asteroid.

More than 170,000 people have signed their names to Dawn, an amazing feat for a mission that NASA resurrected from the dead. But you better hurry or you’ll miss the boat. Now i'm not sure exactly why anyone would want their name flown out into space but it does sound interesting. I can't really see any significance of having your name on that probe. Has anyone here signed? If so, for what reason?

Why?
Well, I suppose it's a little bit because of the novelty of it.
But the idea of some part of me, even if it's just my name
living on, in the chance that I don't is a major part of it, that
and how cool would it be if some future human exploration
found it, or better yet aliens.


I suppose it could be to, that it's just so exotic, I mean how
many times are you actually going to have a chance to have
some part of your identity be part of something like this.

They usually do this sort of thing to probes that will never return to the solar system, they had a gold disk on voyager with a similar thing.

I don't think i'd be too thrilled with that

The aliens would show up on Earth with "a list" ..
aka the Book of Life. And if your name isnt in it, you die!!
So sign your name asap! lol.

I'm just joking, but I could see a race of aliens show up inquiring about each of us whom had our names on it, lol.

If they wanted to talk to you, would you talk or would you run?! lol ..

Why use a list when they can just look you up on google.

Well I would hope they knew english, and I would talk to them. If they decided to take me with them...yes I would run.

I'd definately talk to them, that'd be one of the greatest things ever.
If they asked me to come with them, I'd go, getting to see the vast
universe, learn about there, and other alien species and cultures,
plus all the anal probes I want!

Okay that I agree with. I would defenitley want to see the universe and all it's glory, but I would want to come back to earth someday. Anal probing....not so much..
