I can't seem to get my avatar to stick... any recommendations?

I've followed the step by step instructions and uploaded the pic, copied URL and pasted... just after I submit it goes blank in Avatar URL space and says no avatar in sidebar


Please help in any way you can

The problem is that the image is too big.
Maximum avatar dimentions are 160x320 px. Your image is 427x365 px.
I could shrink it if you like.
