Ishmael Khaldi is an Arab, a Muslim, and a proud citizen of the nation of Israel, and he thinks his homeland is getting a bad rap.

Khaldi, in Victoria as part of a North American speaking tour on Monday, spoke to an appreciative audience at the Jewish Synagogue on Pandora and Blanshard about what he sees as misrepresentations of Israel in the western press.

�People are attacking Israel for being racist,� he said, before going on to say that his own experience as a minority in Israel proves that wrong.

Khaldi, who holds a Masters degree in political science from Tel Aviv University, is currently training to become the first Arab diplomat in the Israeli government.
